Conservation field day is set

   The Jones Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) and Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) have partnered with Jones Farm Service Agency (FSA) to sponsor a Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) field day Thursday, Aug. 22 from 9 to 11 a.m.

   Dean Zimmerman will host the event on his conservation farm located at 13213 Richland Rd., Monticello.

Summer intern begins work for Jones SWCD

   My name is Cael Meyer, and I am the 2024 summer intern with the Jones Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) in Anamosa.

   I am from Dundee, Iowa, where my family owns a property along the Maquoketa River. I enjoy spending time hunting and working on habitat management plans for our family farm.

   This fall, I will be a senior at Upper Iowa University (UIU), majoring in conservation management. Post-graduation, I’d like to start a career in habitat management.

Barn tours offer unique experiences

   If you are looking for something different to do on a September weekend, consider taking a self-guided tour of Iowa’s historic barns.

   The Iowa Barn Foundation is holding its annual All-State Tour on Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15, featuring a record 92 barns across the state that will be available for visiting inside and out from 9-5 both days. It is billed as the largest barn tour the country.

McMullen inducted into 4-H Hall of Fame

   Larry McMullen, better known as “Mr. Porkchop,” is this year’s Jones County inductee into the Iowa 4-H Foundation Hall of Fame.

   McMullen was recognized during a special ceremony as part of the 4-H Swine Show July 18 at the Great Jones County Fair.

Quilt, charcuterie results listed

   Results have been announced for the Quilt Block Contest and Charcuterie Board Contest, part of the Open Exhibits at the Great Jones County Fair, have been announced.

   The Quilt Block Contest had 16 entries, the Judge’s Choice winner was Michele Hogue of Coggon, and the People’s Choice winner was Cheryl Smeed of Davenport.

Conservation awards go to Andreesen, Zumbach families

   The Andresen family and the Zumbach family, both of Anamosa, were presented awards by the Jones Soil and Water Conservation District in separate events July 10.

   Kurt and Ronald Andreesen were presented with the Conservation Farmer of the Year Award for practices implemented to prevent erosion and improve water quality.

   They operate three farms: one owned by Kurt, one by Ron and Barb Andressen, and one by Kurt’s father-in-law, Randy Stolte.
