Iowa crops continue to thrive following another abnormally hot, wet week

Corn and soybean crops continue to progress well throughout Iowa, with 15% of corn silking and 36% of soybeans blooming amid another week of above-average temperatures and precipitation, according to the latest crop progress and condition report. 

     This statistic puts corn two days ahead of the five-year average, and the report, generated from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, said there were several accounts of corn reaching the dough stage across the state.

DES MOINES, Iowa – As of July 1, 2025, The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship will call the Hoover State Office Building home. After more than four decades in the Henry A. Wallace State Office Building, the Department will depart the building at the end of June. The Department is the last remaining tenant of the Wallace Building.

Iowa had 'wettest' week of the season last week

State Climatologist Justin Glisan said the June 23 through June 29 reporting period was the “wettest” of the season, with precipitation totals 2-4 inches above normal in some areas. 

   While the rain hindered some field work, it was overall beneficial for Iowa crops which continue to rate highly according to the crop progress and condition report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Between the Jones County Ag Breakfast, held on June 2, and the upcoming Fourth of July Parades and Great Jones County Fair, the Jones County Dairy Promoters have been busy.

   “Our last big event was the Ag Breakfast that we did with the other commodity groups in the county. We supplied all the dairy products, milk butter, anything dairy. Same with the other commodity groups, the Cattlemen did the ribeye and the Pork Producers had the sausage links.”

Conrad continues to pile up awards at beef shows

It began when she was 4 years old, tugging on a halter worn by her calf, Buck, during the Kiddie Beef Show during the 2014 Great Jones County Fair.

   Carley Conrad is now a seasoned veteran of beef shows, having shown beef cattle throughout Iowa and beyond, and amassing a collection of banners, signs, ribbons and more on display in the Conrad home.

   Then there is the director’s chair, representing one of her biggest accomplishments, showing the Champion Supreme Breeding Heifer in last year’s GJCF.

   The top-10 individuals include: first – Kate Hosch, second – Maxine Hosch, third – Lee Hosch, fourth – Millie Hosch, fifth – Clara Hosch, sixth – Kate Hosch, seventh – Millie Hosch, eighth – Cyrus Telleen, ninth – Kate Hosch and 10th – Clara Hosch.
