Koehler enjoys her involvement in dairy industry

     With her senior year of high school ahead of her, Leah Koehler, Jones County’s Dairy Princess is preparing for a busy summer.

   Koehler’s family has been in the dairy cow business since she was a little kid.

   “My dad majored in dairy science at Iowa State University,” she said. “He’s been involved in the industry for a long time. We grew up with it, going to different dairy farms.”

   It’s no surprise, then, that Koehler has plans to also attend ISU after graduation in May 2025 to major in bio-chemistry.

Calving clinic, other activities keep Youth Beef Team Busy

   It has been another busy, successful year for the Jones County Youth Beef Team.

   Youth Beef Team is a state-wide program through the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation for ages 12-18. Each year, youth members are encouraged to learn, educate and promote beef in their counties.

   The Jones County Youth Beef Team began in July 2022 to offer more opportunities for young beef enthusiasts, affiliated with the Jones County Beef Producers.

SWCD Poster Contest winners announced

   Winners have been announced in the Jones Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) Conservation Poster Contest.

   This year’s contest theme was “May the Forest Be With You Always.”

   Adriana Ames took first place in the grade 7-9 division. Also winning were Casandra Hayden, sixth grade; Easton Skinner, third grade; and Wyatt Inglis, kindergarten.

   Winners were presented with $25 cash awards. The contest had 49 entries from Jones County students in grades K-12.

 

 

Producers urged to file crop reports

   Agricultural producers in Iowa should make an appointment with their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office to complete crop acreage reports before the applicable deadline after planting is complete.

Nine to vie for Jones County Beef Ambassador status

   Nine candidates have been nominated in hopes of being selected as the Jones County Beef Ambassadors for 2024.

   The final selections will be made by the Jones County Beef Producers.

   Here are capsule looks at each of the candidates.

   Addison is a junior at Anamosa High School. She is the daughter of Matt and Katy Appelhans.

   The definition of an outstanding Iowan: a member of the community with a strong work ethic, someone who demonstrates integrity, is always volunteering, shows a strong sense of hometown and state pride, all with a smile on their face.

Scotch Grove Challengers

   The April meeting of the Scotch Grove Challengers was called to order by Lilly Stoll at 5 p.m.

   Roll call question was: “What is your favorite thing about spring?” Seven members were present. The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Sydney Sparks. Sydney Sparks gave the Secretary’s report. Reagan Stoll approved the Secretary’s Report, seconded by Elizabeth Oswald. Jorja Jacobs gave the Treasurer’s Report. Raiden Harbaugh approved the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Abby Kracke.

GUEST COLUMN: Congress must stop misguided California policies

   Prop 12 is proving to be costly for not only Iowa pig farmers but California consumers too. I am glad to see the U.S. House Ag Committee taking steps in the farm bill to protect producers from a patchwork of state laws like this.

Third annual Jones County Ag Breakfast is Sunday

   Commodity groups and agricultural organizations are coming together to offer the third annual Jones County Ag Breakfast Sunday, June 2, 9-11 a.m. at the Equestrian Center on the Great Jones County Fairgrounds.

   The breakfast includes eggs, pancakes, steaks, sausage, butter, cheese, milk and ice cream.

   It is a collaboration between the Jones County Dairy Producers, the Jones County Pork Producers, the Jones County Cattlemen, the Iowa Corn Association and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
