   The “Purchase Moore Hamann Bacon” promotion by the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) involving Iowa State Cyclone football players is back for the 2024 season, with more students joining the cast.

USDA launches debt consolidation tool

   The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is announcing the launch of the Debt Consolidation Tool, an innovative online tool available through farmers.gov that allows agricultural producers to enter their farm operating debt and evaluate the potential savings that might be provided by obtaining a debt consolidation loan with USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) or a local lender.

BQA workshops offer online option

   Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in cooperation with the Iowa Beef Industry Council, will host Beef Quality Assurance training programs in September.

   While the workshops are in Bloomfield, Humeston and Marshalltown in central and south-central Iowa, producers unable to attend an in-person workshop may complete this training online at https://bqa.beeflearningcenter.org/.

   DeLainy Fellinger of Hopkinton, and Brady Hayen and Sydney Sparks of Monticello, were among the big animal shows winners in the early days of the recent Iowa State Fair.

Field day focuses on establishment of native prairie

   Dean Zimmerman had a piece of advice for those attending a Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) field day and wishing to establish native prairie: be patient.

   “The first couple of years, things can look kind of sparse, and you’re wondering how well it’s going to turn out,” Zimmerman told the roughly 25 people in attendance Aug. 22 on his farm near Richland Road in Monticello.

Beringer-Crock named Conservation Woman of the Year

   Third generation farmer Lillie Beringer-Crock of Cascade was named 2024 Iowa Conservation Woman of the Year at the Conservation Districts of Iowa annual meeting Aug. 19 in Ames.

   A 2018 Iowa State University graduate, Beringer-Crock took over Beringer Family Farms about five years ago. She inherited an operation with a strong beef focus, including a cow-calf herd and a 1,500-head feedlot, along with cropland with corn, soybeans and alfalfa.

   Results from early 4-H/FFA shows at the Iowa State Fair have come in, including those from the Photography Salon, Breeding Sheep Show and Weed Identification Contest.

Poll: Land renters often live nearby

   It’s no secret that much of Iowa’s farmland is rented, and non-operator farmland owners are often considered to be out-of-touch if they do not live on the land they rent.

   But data from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach shows that most landowners live fairly close to their land, and many have kin or friendship ties to their tenants.

Century, Heritage farms are recognized

   Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation President Brent Johnson honored 439 Iowa farm families with Century or Heritage Farm designations during the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

   The program celebrates farms that have been owned by the same families for 100 and 150 years, respectively.

     This year, 277 Century Farms and 162 Heritage Farms were recognized during ceremonies in the historic livestock pavilion on the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
