   The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is accepting applications for Composting and Food Waste Reduction (CFWR) pilot projects for fiscal year 2024.

     “As a third-generation female farmer, I would hope and pray that my grandfather would be really proud. He was my biggest supporter. Anything I do is to give back for what he started. He was a man who was very business oriented and always thought outside of the box in order to make things work. This is exactly what I have done and continue to keep doing.”

   Beringer Family Farms is the name-brand Lillie Beringer put on her farming operation in rural Cascade. She is a third-generation beef farmer.

Home site, new building help with butchering business

   Since going into business as Miller Custom Butchering, LLC last September, Noah Miller of Hopkinton has learned the advantages not only of having his own, new building to serve as a locker, but for it to be on the same site as his home.

   “A home business is something that I always had in the back of my mind,” he said. “I did construction for 13½ years, and I just wanted to have a home business.

The Cone Shoppe takes part in Dairy Month

   The Cone Shoppe of Monticello is well aware that June is Dairy Month.

   The restaurant, which serves soft ice cream, sandwiches, wraps, salads and more, put together a couple of promotions to celebrate the month.

   On June 16, The Cone Shoppe held a two-hour event in which it served free ice cream cones, and kids got to spin a wheel to earn prizes. On hand was Leah Koehler, the Jones County Dairy Princess.

Koehler enjoys her involvement in dairy industry

     With her senior year of high school ahead of her, Leah Koehler, Jones County’s Dairy Princess is preparing for a busy summer.

   Koehler’s family has been in the dairy cow business since she was a little kid.

   “My dad majored in dairy science at Iowa State University,” she said. “He’s been involved in the industry for a long time. We grew up with it, going to different dairy farms.”

   It’s no surprise, then, that Koehler has plans to also attend ISU after graduation in May 2025 to major in bio-chemistry.

Calving clinic, other activities keep Youth Beef Team Busy

   It has been another busy, successful year for the Jones County Youth Beef Team.

   Youth Beef Team is a state-wide program through the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation for ages 12-18. Each year, youth members are encouraged to learn, educate and promote beef in their counties.

   The Jones County Youth Beef Team began in July 2022 to offer more opportunities for young beef enthusiasts, affiliated with the Jones County Beef Producers.

SWCD Poster Contest winners announced

   Winners have been announced in the Jones Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) Conservation Poster Contest.

   This year’s contest theme was “May the Forest Be With You Always.”

   Adriana Ames took first place in the grade 7-9 division. Also winning were Casandra Hayden, sixth grade; Easton Skinner, third grade; and Wyatt Inglis, kindergarten.

   Winners were presented with $25 cash awards. The contest had 49 entries from Jones County students in grades K-12.

 

 

Producers urged to file crop reports

   Agricultural producers in Iowa should make an appointment with their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) office to complete crop acreage reports before the applicable deadline after planting is complete.

Nine to vie for Jones County Beef Ambassador status

   Nine candidates have been nominated in hopes of being selected as the Jones County Beef Ambassadors for 2024.

   The final selections will be made by the Jones County Beef Producers.

   Here are capsule looks at each of the candidates.

   Addison is a junior at Anamosa High School. She is the daughter of Matt and Katy Appelhans.
