     “On behalf of President Dr. Kristie Fisher, the Kirkwood Foundation, and myself, I want to express our sincere gratitude for attending our inaugural Kirkwood Jones County Leadership Council. What a fantastic group of Jones County leaders. We recognize how busy you are, and we appreciate you sharing your time and input with us. The purpose of yesterday's meeting was to establish a foundation for collaboration, foster community engagement, and generate momentum for future initiatives.

Monticello prepares for Homecoming 2024

     The Monticello Community School District (MCSD) has announced its schedule of events and activities for Homecoming Week, Sept. 16-21.

   Ironman Volleyball and the Powder Puff games will take place on Monday evening, Sept. 16. Ironman will be held at 6 p.m. in the high school gym. Powder Puff will be at 7:30 p.m. at Dean Nelson Field.

   The Homecoming Parade will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m.

‘My first car…’

     This is the seventh feature in a series about local residents reminiscing about their very first car.

   Since the mid-1970s, Charlie Becker of Monticello has owned 6.5 Volkswagen Beetles. (More on that half later…)

   Growing up in Dubuque, Becker got his first job when he was 14 years old.

   “Once I got my first paycheck, I bought a bike,” he recalled.

   Becker has two brothers. As they all started to learn to drive, there was just the family station wagon.

Monticello library offers new ‘Lattes & Literature’ book club

     The Monticello Public Library is starting a new book club.

   "Lattes & Literature" will begin Saturday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. inside the library. It will take place every third Saturday of the month.

Economic Development dives into tourism data for Jones Co.

     What month out of the year sees the most visitors/tourists in Jones County? Do people tend to spend one day or multiple days when they visit Jones County? Where are visitors to Jones County coming from?

   The answers to these and questions and many more concerning travel and tourism can be answered thanks to an online data platform now used by Jones County Economic Development (JCED).

County website now offering public notifications

     In March, County Auditor Whitney Hein, Sheriff Greg Graver, and County IT Coordinator Lisa Mootz (members of the county website committee) all met with the Jones County Supervisors to discuss an upgrade to the county website.

   For a one-time fee of $1,000, the county was able to offer the public the opportunity to sign up for notifications.

Annual MFD fundraiser turns into downtown ‘Battle of DJs’

     For decades, the Monticello Fire Department held their annual dance fundraiser at the Monticello Eagles Club in November. Due to poor public attendance and a busy holiday season, the MFD decided to change things up a bit…

   “Over the past few years, we saw pretty minimal attendance,” shared Firefighter Johnny Russ. “Plus, in November, you’re close to the holidays. We saw diminished attendance so we thought we’d try something different.”

12th Annual Monti in Motion car show planned for Sept. 15

     The 12th Annual Monti in Motion downtown car show is fast approaching.

   Monticello, IA Main Street has taken over the event, noting that the car show takes place in the heart of the Main Street district on Sunday, Sept. 15.

   “This provides us with an opportunity to have some different interaction in our downtown,” urged Main Street Director Brian Wolken. “Main Street took over this event and anticipates an opportunity for future growth.”

All moms welcome to join ‘Jones County Moms’

     The first meeting of the school year for the Jones County Moms group will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m. The monthly meetings are held at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church outside of Monticello, located at 15531 County Road E-17.

   The Jones County Moms meet the second Tuesday of the month, September through May.
