October marks the 15^th anniversary of the opening of UnityPoint Health – Jones Regional Medical Center (JRMC) critical access hospital in Jones County.

“To steel a quote from Matt Campbell (Iowa State University football coach): ‘I never got into this job to be somebody; I got into this job to do something.’ That's exactly how I feel. I want to be able to improve outcomes and the healthcare for everybody,” shared JRMC CEO Eric Briesemeister when reflecting on the past 15 years.

Jones Co. E911, GIS work to provide addresses to cemeteries

The Jones County 911 Service Board/E911 and GIS (Geographic Information System), led by Gary Schwab and Kristi Aitchison respectively, have been working together to provide addresses for all publicly accessible cemeteries in Jones County.

This entails pioneer cemeteries, township cemeteries, in-town/city cemeteries, and church cemeteries.

“I had been thinking about doing this for quite a while, a few years actually,” shared 911 Coordinator Schwab.

Chamber plans events for Manufacturing Month

The Monticello Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) has been working hard behind the scenes to plan two great upcoming events in October to honor and celebrate National Manufacturing Month.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m., the community is invited to join MACC and local manufacturing leaders on tours of four manufacturing companies:

• 7^th Street Stone Company, 204 W. Seventh St.

• Polo Custom Products, 902 N. Birch St.

• Julin Printing, 801 N. Birch St.

Anamosa’s Pumpkinfest kicks off Oct. 5

On Saturday, Oct. 5, individuals will gather in Anamosa for the 36^th Annual Pumpkinfest & Ryan Norlin Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off. This year’s theme is “Save the Pumpkins.” The theme was chosen to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Arduser brings White Collar Grooming to Monticello

There is a new pet grooming business in Monticello.

Darcy Arduser, owner of White Collar Grooming, recently reopened her business at 808 W. First St. after relocating from Anamosa.

Arduser started in the dog/cat grooming industry in 2018. She went out on her own in 2021.

"I had an opportunity to start my own business," she said at the time.

The Arduser family resides in Monticello. Arduser said it was always her plan to live and work in Monticello.

Express pioneer, Wagner, passes away

On Sept. 22, The Monticello Express family lost a trailblazer…

Betty J. Wagner, or as she became known in her weekly opinion pieces “B.J.W.,” passed away in New Mexico. She was born on March 4, 1936, in Higginsville, Mo.

Wagner’s history with the Express is monumental, as was her life in journalism and civic service.
