Transition Center students host chili cook-off contest

     The Monticello Community School District Transition Center welcomed guests and community and business leaders to their chili cook-off on March 8.

   Students picked their chili recipe of choice, shopped for the ingredients, and cooked a pot of chili for all to enjoy.

   Guests taste-tested the three options before voting on their favorite.

   People’s Choice First Place went to Jeremy Fisher with his “Dragon King Chili.” Fisher used all fresh ingredients in his chili, with the exception of canned tomatoes.

Model Car Contest winners announced

   The 38th Annual Model Car Contest (featured at the KCRG-TV9-presented 54th Annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Rod & Custom Car Show) took place, Feb. 25-26 at the Monticello Berndes Center.

   Contest winners received a trophy and model kit awards. Results are as follows:

Open Category, ages 18 and over (Cars)

   First place, Virgil Stanbary, Burlington; second place, Josh Jacobsen, Boone; third place, David Hayes, Lisbon; fourth place, Willie Moseley, Fairfax; fifth place, James Kremer, Monticello.

Local bankers take part in Iowa PBS Festival

     Sixteen bankers from banks across the state helped kick off Iowa PBS’ annual pledge drive, known as “Festival,” which continues through March 12. Volunteers answered pledge phones from 5 to 10 p.m. to help raise $18,270.62 for the public television network.

Main Street Monticello offering free Google workshop

     Monticello Main Street is hosting a free workshop on digital skills using resources from “Grow with Google.”

   Monticello Main Street is partnering with Grow with Google to help the community learn digital skills, with a virtual workshop on Tuesday, March 21, at 9 a.m. Businesses can also join a watch party at the Innovation Lab, 101 E. First St., in downtown Monticello.

   During “Get Your Local Business on Google Search and Maps,” individuals will learn the following:

   • Showing up when customers are searching online is more important than ever.

Heritage Center hosts ‘History Hour,” March 28

     The Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center will be hosting another special guest on March 28 as part of their “Monticello History Hour” series.

   Heritage Center board member Bob Hendricks will be visiting with Pam (Norlin) Foley via Facebook Live at 7 p.m. Tune in on the Heritage Center’s Facebook page.

School Foundation raises $30,000 to benefit the MCSD students

     Many Monticello High School alumni; Monticello Community School District teachers, staff, and administrators; many parents and grandparents; and members of the community gathered together to support and raise money for the MCSD.

   The 18th Annual Monticello School District Foundation Tailgate Party & Alumni Reunion was held on March 4. The silent and live auction, ticket sales, 50/50 raffle, and cash drawing combined to raise roughly $32,000 for the students of the MCSD.

School Foundation honors Hannas for long-time commitment to education

     Dr. Phil and Marilyn Hanna, members of the Monticello community since June 1974, were the evening’s honorees on March 4 at the Monticello School District Foundation.

   Phil has been active with the Foundation and serving on the board since 2013, having served as both vice president and president.

   Still serving on the board, Phil found out about the honor at a Foundation meeting.

   “They blindsided him,” Marilyn said. “Meanwhile he was nominating others.”

   Phil said his immediate reaction was, “Why us? We don’t do it for that (the recognition).”

MHS BPA wins big at State, on to Nationals

     Feb. 19-21, 15 Monticello High School BPA (Business Professionals of America) students (out of 25) competed in the State Leadership Conference in Des Moines.

   Out of those 15, 10 students qualified for Nationals, which will take place in late April in Anaheim, Calif.

   BPA Advisor and high school Business Teacher Chanda Gassman said this is the biggest group in a while to win at State and go on to compete at Nationals.

     Each month, Monticello High School nominates a student who exhibits positive behavior, as part of an initiative called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). The students support the school's characteristics of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Safety, and Integrity.

   "When I found out, I didn't believe it at first."

   MHS junior Adelyn Swain shared her reaction to being named Student of the Month for February, one of two students to have the honor.
