Kromminga shows off original Polaris Sno-Traveler

     It’s a rare find, indeed!

     On display now at Kromminga Motors in Monticello is an early 1960s Polaris Sno-Traveler.

     Greg Kromminga, owner of Kromminga’s, recently purchased two of the original Sno-Travelers from Randy Monk, whose father, Ruddy, owned and operated REM Electric in town. Kromminga said aside from owning the electrical business, Ruddy was also a Polaris dealer on the side.

Dudley keeps residents engaged at MNRC

     National Activity Professionals Week is Jan. 22-28. Heather Dudley, the activities director at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Campus, stays busy planning and organizing the many events and activities that take place throughout the center.

     Dudley has been with MNRC for almost two years now, saying the time has gone by fast. She works with the 70-plus residents at the nursing home, planning small- and large-group activities.

     “Seeing them smile and enjoying their time makes my day go by faster,” said Dudley.

Catholic Schools Week

     National Catholic Schools Week is celebrated Jan. 29 through Feb. 4 this year.

     The theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

     Sacred Heart Catholic School in Monticello encompasses grades kindergarten through sixth, as well as a preschool program.

     On the faith side, students and their families are involved in parish programs, supporting the church and the school.

     Sacred Hart raises the standards academically. The average class size is 13, but enrollment is not limited to Catholic families.

MHS hosts district speech, earns 12 “I” ratings

     Monticello achieved 12 Division I ratings out of a possible 16 at the District Large-group Speech Contest, hosted by Monticello High School Saturday, Jan. 21.

     MHS also earned “I” ratings in eight categories at the River Valley Conference Large Group Speech Contest Saturday, Jan. 14 at West Liberty.

     Earning “I” ratings at districts:

     Ensemble Acting – “Pamper Island,” Rileigh Lambert, Anna Loes and Taylor McDonald.

     Ensemble Acting – “So Long, Kitty,” Hannah Gray, Jordyn Patterson and Cleo Sullivan.

Starlighters offers classes for kids

     Starlighters Theatre Kids is introducing its second program for kids starting Saturday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon. This is a free program. No registration is needed.

     Participants must be able to sustain focus on activities, attention to the facilitators, and maintain good behavior for two hours of varied activities. This class is for kids; not intended for high school age or above.

     The basic curriculum is from “Beat” by Beat Press and explores theatre through focused drama games. We will also explore monologues and short scenes as the class progresses.

Brainstorming session for Anamosa public art, Feb. 1

     The City of Anamosa, in partnership with the Grant Wood Scenic Byway, will be hosting a brainstorming session on: Wednesday, Feb. 1 from 4-6 p.m. in the Anamosa Library and Learning Center.

     This session will help Anamosa’s Project Art Advisory Committee determine a theme and design concept for a public art piece to be developed and installed in Anamosa in 2018.

     The Monticello Public Library will host a Valentine’s Tea Party for children ages 4-9 along with their favorite teenager or adult to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The tea party will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10-11:30 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in their best to enjoy games, a craft, card marking, a story, tea and a light lunch.

     Registration is required for this event as space is limited. Call the library at 319-465-3354 to register.

Nickelback tickets for GJCF on sale Feb. 3

     The Great Jones County Fair in Monticello recently announced the sale date for tickets to see rock band Nickelback. Tickets go on sale online only on Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m.

     Track standing-room-only tickets are $55. Amphitheater and bleachers seats are $40. As always, the free hillside offers plenty of space to enjoy the concert, with numerous LED screens displayed around the grounds.

     Original band member, Mike Kroeger, worked at a Starbucks, dispensing coffee drinks and handing change back to customers saying, “Here’s your nickel back.”

Is What It Is specializes in crafts, antiques

     Another new store has opened its doors in downtown Monticello.

     Is What It Is, owned and managed by Buck Covington and Shawna Bechthold, opened in mid-December in the former Above & Beyond office space, across from the Post Office.

     Is What It Is offers customers a mixture of antiques and craft items. Bechthold said her vision for the business was a place for people to visit locally rather than leave town to hit up a craft show or flea market.

     “We just urge people to come here,” she said.

Felton spends NYE in NYC

     Some people spend New Year’s Eve going out for supper and staying out all night. Others attend or plan small private gatherings. Still others prefer to maintain a low profile and stay at home watching the ball drop in Times Square on their television set.

     But one Monticello gal decided she was going to spend New Year’s Eve and ringing in 2017 actually in Times Square in New York City.

     Ellyn Felton, a senior at Wartburg College in Waverly, left Iowa on Dec. 28 for NYC and returned home on Jan. 3.
