Outdoor classroom provides added benefits at Shannon School

     Every May, the Monticello Community School District elementary students take part in the PTO Walk-a-Thon. They run a mile, or sometimes more, around the track.

   This event doesn’t just allow the kids to run off some energy, but it raises money for PTO and the elementary teachers. Students also collect donations/pledges. Last year’s Walk-a-Thon helped raised money for the outdoor classroom at Shannon School. This year’s Walk-a-Thon on May 12 will raise funds for a potential outdoor classroom at Carpenter School in the near future. The goal: $4,000.

Monticello library offers ‘Yarning Circle’

     Beginning Tuesday, May 16, from 1 to 3 p.m., join the Monticello Public Library’s “Yarning Circle.” This adult group is for yarn enthusiasts and all experience levels are encouraged to attend.

Coalition now accepting donations for annual Purse Sale

     The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition is again collecting clean, gently-used, fashionable purses and accessories this year until June 16, the day before the sale. The Coalition’s 12th annual Coalition Purse and Accessory Sale Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, June 17, from 9 to 11 a.m. at 205 E. Main St. in Anamosa, between the Anamosa Chamber office and Two Scoops.

     On Friday, May 12, Cedar/Jones Early Childhood Iowa (ECI) will join national, state, and local community partners in celebrating Child Care Provider Appreciation Day – an annual celebration that recognizes this work of childcare providers, teachers, and caregivers of young children.

Great Give Day, May 17, benefits local non-profits

     Local non-profits are essential for many people in Jones County – from providing necessities like food or clothing to contributing to the vibrant culture of our communities. To support this work, the Jones County Community Foundation (JCCF) engages its non-profit partners to join Great Give Day, the largest day of giving in Eastern Iowa. In 2022, these local organizations raised over $12,000 in just 24 hours to help improve quality of life for all our residents.

Bowman’s leadership recognized through Main Street Iowa

     Members of the Monticello Main Street board were able to keep a pretty good secret leading up to the April 21 Main Street Iowa Development Awards in Des Moines.

   Unbeknownst to one of their members, Board President Deb Bowman, they nominated her for the Main Street Leadership Award. Not only was Bowman surprised by the honor from her fellow cohorts, she was pleasantly surprised when her husband and three daughters showed up to share in the congratulations.

Four generations see changes in Camp Fire

     It’s not unusual to see girls involved in Camp Fire today whose moms were also in the organization when they were young. But one local family has seen four generations of their family dedicate time and talents toward the Camp Fire Monticello Council.

   Vicki Kelchen was enrolled in Camp Fire back when she was in second grade. At that time, girls in preschool and kindergarten could join.

   Her father, Ron Fritz, was active with the organization for 30 years, serving as board president and a group sponsor.

Blind Pig Monticello plans May 3 opening

     A new restaurant/bar in downtown Monticello is set to open and welcome the community in on Wednesday, May 3.

   The opening of Blind Pig Monticello has been much anticipated. Over the course of a year, the community has watched renovations take shape inside and out as the two-story establishment.

   In July 2022, owners Ryan and Megan Evans purchased the building, which used to house The Jitney. A month later, major renovations started.
