     Philip Weirather of Olin is lucky to be alive today. He served two tours of duty in the Army National Guard as a medic in Iraq and Afghanistan. He tried his hand at college a few times; it didn’t take. He enjoyed life, but perhaps a little too much.

Robots and more attract participants in Hour of Code

     Robots, virtual roller coasters, computer programming and more were made available to Jones County students and their parents Wednesday, Dec. 21.

     It was all part of the Jones County Hour of Code, an event held in four different sessions at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center in Monticello.

     A total of 85 kids and parents took part in the event, which was put on by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (ISUEO).

Upcoming auditions at Starlighters Theatre

     Now that the Christmas jolly season is over, it’s time to start thinking about having a jolly time at the January auditions on Monday, Jan. 23; Tuesday, Jan. 24; Wednesday, Jan. 25; and Thursday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. with Director Basilio Light and Assistant Kathryn Williams.

Hackney, Ehrisman open Bipsy & Bopsy Boutique

     The owners of Almost Famous Dance Studio have opened a new clothing and accessory boutique in Monticello.

     Amanda Hackney and Melissa Ehrisman are happy to show off Bipsy & Bopsy Boutique, located adjacent to Almost Famous on S. Cedar Street.

     The shop encompasses roughly 2,000 square feet, including dressing rooms.

     They opened on Dec. 10 and have had great support thus far.

     “This was something we’ve had on our back burner for the last five years or so,” said Hackney of the dream.

Big & Rich, Thomas Rhett tickets go on sale Jan. 20

     The Great Jones County Fair has announced the opening act for county music artist Thomas Rhett.

     Famed country music duo Big & Rich will open the show on Friday, July 21 at 8 p.m.

     Tickets for the concert go on sale Friday, Jan. 20, at 10 a.m. Track SRO (standing-room only) tickets are $49; amphitheater and bleacher seats are $39.

     Rhett was known as a songwriter for his fellow country peers before he made it big as a performer himself. He’s written hits for Jason Aldean, Lee Brice, and Florida Georgia Line.

Miossi shares world-teaching experiences at library

     The Monticello Public Library hosted world traveler Michelle Miossi on Dec. 20, the third speaker in a three-part winter series called “Arm Chair Traveler.”

     Then idea is to bring in locals who have traveled to other parts of the world and share their experiences with those who feel homebound during the cold, winter months.

     Miossi has certainly been to various corners of the world since graduating from Monticello High School in 2007.

     All of her experiences stem from her international teaching positions.

County employees give back to local communities

     This year, Jones County employees chose to donate $1,800 toward eight different organizations throughout the county.

     “We Can Make a Difference” is a donation program, established in 2005, made up of county employees who choose to contribute a portion of their bi-weekly paychecks towards a local cause. Each year around the holidays, donations are presented to several organizations.

     This year, donations of $225 each were presented to:

     • Anamosa Ministerial Association

     • Monticello Ministerial Association

Starlighters Theatre offers children’s workshops

     Starlighters II Community Theatre is offering several activities for children in 2017: Starlighters Kids, Drama Basics Workshop, Storytime at Starlighters, and Summer Camp.

     The first activity, Drama Basics Workshop, begins Sunday, Jan. 8. It is designed for students in grades third through eighth, and will help acquaint students with acting skills. A child does not have to attend the workshops to audition for the Summer Camp; neither does attending the workshops guarantee a part in the camp production.

Jones Co. Farm Bureau celebrates 100 years

     During the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s (IFBF) 98th annual meeting in Des Moines, the Jones County Farm Bureau office was recognized for 100 years of service.

     The first county Farm Bureau was organized in Clinton County in 1912 by farmers who wanted to expand the resources available for area farmers. That year, Scott County, Black Hawk County and Muscatine County also formed local Farm Bureau groups.
