Teacher Appreciation Week, May 8-12

     The National Education Association describes National Teacher Week as “a time for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives.”

     There are numerous teachers through the Monticello Community School District who leave lasting impressions on their students’ lives. Some are long-time educators; others are just starting out their teaching career. Either way, these teachers are inspiring their students on a daily basis.

LifeHope Worship Center opens in Monticello

     There is a new church in Monticello.

     LifeHope Worship Center actually started last September, but has been growing in members ever since.

     The church was started by Dennis and Linda Krog of Marion.

     “The Lord is so wonderful and we’re so glad to be in Monticello,” shared Linda.

     Both are retired educators, but are continuing their teachings, this time with the Bible.

     LifeHope is a spirit-filled independent church, explained Linda.

     “We are now associated with any denomination,” she said.

Moore encourages interest in 2017 GJCF Queen

     My name is Cassidy Moore, and I was honored to be selected as the 2016 Great Jones County Fair Queen.

     I graduated high school in May 2015 from Lisbon, my hometown. In the upcoming school year I will be a senior at Iowa State University, majoring in Supply Chain Management with a minor in Management.

Jamison honored for service to Coalition

     United Way of Central Iowa held its annual volunteer recognition breakfast on April 20, and one Jones County resident was announced as a top three finalist in the senior citizen category.

     Karmen Jamison, of Wyoming, was nominated by Jennifer Husmann, project coordinator with the Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition. Jamison has been with the Coalition for about six years now.

Money Smart Week poster contest winners announced

     F&M Bank in conjunction with Community Bankers of Iowa (CBI) sponsored the Money Smart Week Poster Contest to motive elementary school students to learn about money. For showing Iowa bankers what they know, students in second through sixth grade had the chance to win either a $600 Certificate of Deposit (first place prize) or a $300 Certificate of Deposit (second and third place prizes).

Girls with Ideas impacts MNRC

     Eleven sixth grade girls from Monticello Middle School recently took part in the pilot program, Girls with Ideas.

     This program was held at the Monticello EXCEL Center for Entrepreneurship, and instructed by Jen Jaeger.

     The Girls with Ideas program was actually started by Dr. Allison Poss to empower young girls to share their ideas and visions, to change the world.

     The EXCEL Center brought the 11-week program to Monticello to further creativity for local girls and help them expand or develop their their leadership skills.

Still time to register for PTO Fun Run, May 13

     The Monticello PTO Fun Run is fast approaching, set for Saturday, May 13. The race kicks off at 10:30 a.m. at the Monticello High School grounds.

     For those who have not registered to take part in the family-friendly event, you can still register the morning of the race at 9:30. The cost is $20; though a pack of bubbles and a t-shirt will not be guaranteed. Registration forms are also still available at each school office, or sign up online at tinyurl.com/montifunrun.

Manternach chosen as ‘Chalk the Walk’ artist

     Every year the City of Mont Vernon hosts an event called “Chalk the Walk.” This year marks the 12th anniversary, and a local Monticello resident and Monticello Express employee will be one of the featured artists.

     Abby Manternach, 24, was chosen to be a first-time Chalk the Walk participant. She’s attended the event in the past as a spectator, and will now have the opportunity to show off her own artistic talent.

Student of the month: Shawn Jackson

     Each month, Monticello High School nominates a student who exhibits positive behavior, as part of an initiative called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). The students support the school’s characteristics of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Safety, and Integrity.

     Sophomore Shawn Jackson stays focused on his schoolwork. For that reason and others, Jackson was nominated for Student of the Month for April.

Thank your Monticello School, Board members

     May is “School Board Recognition Month.” Those serving on the Monticello Community School District Board of Education are: Dave Melchert, Bud Johnson, John Schlarmann, Peg Mere and Angie Beitz.

     School board members volunteer to serve thousands of hours each year, working to ensure every Iowa student receives a solid education. School Board Recognition Month is an opportunity to say “thank you” to nearly 1,900 men and women who are impacting Iowa schools.
