Still time to register for PTO Fun Run, May 13

     The Monticello PTO Fun Run is fast approaching, set for Saturday, May 13. The race kicks off at 10:30 a.m. at the Monticello High School grounds.

     For those who have not registered to take part in the family-friendly event, you can still register the morning of the race at 9:30. The cost is $20; though a pack of bubbles and a t-shirt will not be guaranteed. Registration forms are also still available at each school office, or sign up online at tinyurl.com/montifunrun.

Manternach chosen as ‘Chalk the Walk’ artist

     Every year the City of Mont Vernon hosts an event called “Chalk the Walk.” This year marks the 12th anniversary, and a local Monticello resident and Monticello Express employee will be one of the featured artists.

     Abby Manternach, 24, was chosen to be a first-time Chalk the Walk participant. She’s attended the event in the past as a spectator, and will now have the opportunity to show off her own artistic talent.

Student of the month: Shawn Jackson

     Each month, Monticello High School nominates a student who exhibits positive behavior, as part of an initiative called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). The students support the school’s characteristics of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Safety, and Integrity.

     Sophomore Shawn Jackson stays focused on his schoolwork. For that reason and others, Jackson was nominated for Student of the Month for April.

Thank your Monticello School, Board members

     May is “School Board Recognition Month.” Those serving on the Monticello Community School District Board of Education are: Dave Melchert, Bud Johnson, John Schlarmann, Peg Mere and Angie Beitz.

     School board members volunteer to serve thousands of hours each year, working to ensure every Iowa student receives a solid education. School Board Recognition Month is an opportunity to say “thank you” to nearly 1,900 men and women who are impacting Iowa schools.

Coalition seeks used purses, accessories

     The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition is now collecting gently used, fashionable purses and accessories now until June 15 for their Sixth Annual Coalition Purse and Accessory Sale Fundraiser on Saturday, June 17.

     The Coalition has a new location at 110 S. Williams St. in Anamosa. Items can be donated there rather than the previous downtown Anamosa office. Monticello residents can drop off their purses or accessories at Michael’s Clothing again this year.

Porch Posse gives back as it serves the community

     Ladies from the Monticello High School Class of 1969 enjoy each other’s company, sharing stories from times’ past, reminiscing, laughing together. But more than anything, they enjoy giving back to the community.

     This is where the “Porch Posse – At Your Service” comes into play.

‘You make me smile’

     Kelli Naylor has a simple explanation for the vision she had to create “You Make Me Smile,” the 2012 children’s book that honors the memory of three deceased Iowa children.

     “God just hit my heart,” Naylor said.

     The Monticello author will appear at a book reading event Monday, May 1, 5-7 p.m. at Shine On Gifts and Specialties, 408 E. First St., Monticello. The event is geared for kids ages 10 and under, both girls and boys. The cost per child is $6.

Starlighters to audition for ‘Gigi’

     Auditions for the Starlighters II production of the musical “Gigi” will be May 7-9 at the Anamosa theatre.

     Adults and teens are needed for the play, which tells the story of an enchanting and independent young lady learning about life and love in 1890s Paris. This emotional, lively musical with show-stopping numbers is set in elegant Paris. It was voted the best film of 1958. A revival was staged in an alternate version on Broadway in 2015.

Proclamation honors Heart & Soul

     A proclamation read during the Monticello City Council meeting of April 17 recognized Monticello Heart & Soul for its “discovery of what matters most to the residents of Monticello.”

     Heart & Soul has spent two years exploring community values and preparing value statements with the goal of providing guidance and direction to the residents and leaders of Monticello, the proclamation noted.

St. Matthew welcomes new pastor

     St. Matthew Lutheran Church welcomed a new full-time pastor.

     Rev. David Raemisch has been called to serve the church, having been ordained to the Ministry of Word and Sacrament on April 1.

     Prior to coming to St. Matthew, Raemisch served for one year as an interim pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Dubuque.

     “We were looking for a church close to the Dubuque community,” said Raemisch, whose wife works in the city. “I became aware of this opportunity and it just worked out beautifully for all concerned.”
