     The Monticello Public Library will host a Valentine’s Tea Party for children ages 4-9 along with their favorite teenager or adult to celebrate Valentine’s Day. The tea party will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10-11:30 a.m. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in their best to enjoy games, a craft, card marking, a story, tea and a light lunch.

     Registration is required for this event as space is limited. Call the library at 319-465-3354 to register.

Nickelback tickets for GJCF on sale Feb. 3

     The Great Jones County Fair in Monticello recently announced the sale date for tickets to see rock band Nickelback. Tickets go on sale online only on Friday, Feb. 3 at 10 a.m.

     Track standing-room-only tickets are $55. Amphitheater and bleachers seats are $40. As always, the free hillside offers plenty of space to enjoy the concert, with numerous LED screens displayed around the grounds.

     Original band member, Mike Kroeger, worked at a Starbucks, dispensing coffee drinks and handing change back to customers saying, “Here’s your nickel back.”

Is What It Is specializes in crafts, antiques

     Another new store has opened its doors in downtown Monticello.

     Is What It Is, owned and managed by Buck Covington and Shawna Bechthold, opened in mid-December in the former Above & Beyond office space, across from the Post Office.

     Is What It Is offers customers a mixture of antiques and craft items. Bechthold said her vision for the business was a place for people to visit locally rather than leave town to hit up a craft show or flea market.

     “We just urge people to come here,” she said.

Felton spends NYE in NYC

     Some people spend New Year’s Eve going out for supper and staying out all night. Others attend or plan small private gatherings. Still others prefer to maintain a low profile and stay at home watching the ball drop in Times Square on their television set.

     But one Monticello gal decided she was going to spend New Year’s Eve and ringing in 2017 actually in Times Square in New York City.

     Ellyn Felton, a senior at Wartburg College in Waverly, left Iowa on Dec. 28 for NYC and returned home on Jan. 3.

Express seeks unique story ideas

     The Monticello Express is once again getting ready to publish its annual “Wedding Album” issue on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Inside, you will find helpful feature stories for all your wedding planning: jeweler, florist, catering, reception halls, tuxedo rental, and more!

    We would also like to include stories about unique weddings and engagements, destination weddings, or anything special about one’s wedding or engagement.

     Also, if you have a story about a couple who is going to or has celebrated a milestone anniversary, we’d like to hear from you as well.

ISU Extension offers ‘Bake for Good’

     Don’t you love the wonderful smell of fresh baked goods?

     On Monday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 18, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer two baking sessions: “Bake for Good.”

     • Jan. 16, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Barn Farm with lunch.

     • Jan. 18, 1:30 to 6 p.m. at Midland High School with dinner.

     Kids will participate in the “Bake for Good” and learn that math, science, reading and baking know-how add up to something delicious.

B.E. Fitness encourages healthy lifestyles in New Year

     To help people accomplish and stay accountable for their New Year’s resolutions for a healthier lifestyle, B.E. Fitness & Training Center in Monticello is offering a wealth of classes morning and night.

     The classes are geared toward strength training (anaerobic) and/or cardio workout (aerobic).

     “According to the NIH (National Institutes of Health),” said B.E. Fitness’ Group Fitness Manager Andrea Hall, “you can reduce your risk of chronic vascular disease by aiming for 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity five days a week.”

DuTrac donates to support AWF Foundation

     On behalf of the members of DuTrac Community Credit Union, $500 was donated to the Monticello Animal Welfare Foundation.

     “We are extremely grateful for this donation,” said Tracy McCarty, AWF manager. “The money will go towards medical expenses that occur during the intake of animals. It will pay for animals to be spayed or neutered along with any vaccinations they may require.”

     The Foundation began over 12 years ago and since its founding, the organization has helped hundreds of animals from Jones County and out of state.

Monticello library offers STEM for adults

     STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is not just for students. And the Monticello Public Library is about to change that.

     From January through April, the library is introducing a book series, one book a month, dedicated to STEM.

     The series, titled “Pushing the Limits,” was made possible through a $3,500 grant the library received. Monticello Librarian MaDonna Kremer said only 100 libraries in the country are taking in the program.

Monti grand to share book in TV network

     Monticello High School graduate (Class of 2001) Tony Digmann will be appearing on national television to discuss his book, “Sign of Contradiction: Contraception, Family Planning, and Catholicism.”

     Tune in to EWTN’s “At Home with Jim and Joy” on Monday, Jan. 16 for the live show at 1 p.m. It will also re-air on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 9:30 a.m.
