F&M Bank collects winter items

     Temperatures are dropping and winter weather is coming soon, and the local need for warm winter items is high. F&M Bank recently hosted a successful F&M Cares Winter Clothing Drive in order to aid in the need, accepting new or gently used winter coats, snow pants, boots, hats and mittens in toddler through young adult sizes.

     Thanks to the help of the public and local businesses, they were able to drop off donations anytime throughout October at several locations in Jones County. In total, 268 winter items will be distributed in Jones County children in need.

Tommy the cat returns ‘home’

     The volunteers, supporters and staff of Animal Welfare Foundation Shelter in Monticello all have something to be thankful for this holiday season: Tommy.

     The now-mascot of the new cat and dog shelter has returned “home” after more than three years on the run.

     Tommy, who is 5 years old, was first introduced to AWF when he was staying at the Cat Adoption Center in Anamosa. The center sadly caught fire and was destroyed in October 2013. AWF volunteers at the time were able to save and rescue 21 of the 22 cats from the center that day, except for Tommy.

     Each month, Monticello High School nominates a student who exhibits positive behavior, as part of an initiative called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). The students support the school’s characteristics of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Safety, and Integrity.

     The November Student of the Month at MHS is senior Tyler Hospodarsky. He was nominated for the honor because of his positive attitude and strong character, and for being a role model to younger students.

Coalition members honored for service, dedication

     During the Jones County Safe & Healthy Youth Coalition’s Nov. 9 meeting, Outstanding Membership Awards were handed out. These awards are based on a combination of in-kind hours dedicated toward the Coalition’s efforts, volunteer roles, and responsibilities in the Coalition’s activities and action steps.

     Thanksgiving is a time of the year when we reflect on what we are thankful for in our lives. As we go through our daily lives throughout the year, we need to take the time to be thankful. As the Superintendent of Midland, I am very thankful for a number of things.

Kirkwood’s JREC staff guide students through life

     Kirkwood’s Jones Regional Education Center in Monticello is a happening place.

     It’s not a stretch to say that the people who work there stay busy non-stop. Whether it’s meeting with high school students, college students or both, the staff at JREC has plenty of their plates.

     Welter works part-time at JREC, yet certainly has enough to fill her days. Welter takes on three titles at Kirkwood: Career counselor, academic adviser, and continuing education coordinator.

DNR proposes establishing local BCA

The Iowa DNR, along with Jones County Conservation, held a public meeting last week, Nov. 15, about the proposed Indian Bluffs-Pictured Rocks Bird Conservation Area (BCA) in Jones County.
The program was mainly led by Bruce Ehresman, wildlife biologist with the DNR. Also on hand were Doug Harr with the Iowa Audubon Society and Curt Kemmerer, DNR wildlife biologist.

Starlighters’ musical brings families together

We all remember  a version of “Miracle on 34th Street,” whether it’s the 1947 movie starring Maureen O’Hara and Natalie Wood, or the 1994 movie with Richard Attenborough and Mara Wilson. But, did you know there is a musical version of the story featuring music written by Meredith Wilson?
Starlighters II Theatre in Anamosa will present the holiday musical on Dec. 2-4 and again Dec. 9-11. The production is certainly a family affair, not just for audience members, but those cast in the show and working behind the scenes.
 

B.E. Fitness and Training set to open Dec. 1

The new B.E. Fitness and Training Center (formerly B.E. Somebody Fitness) on John Drive is set to open just in  time for the holiday season, Dec. 1.
The public is invited to tour the renovated fitness and training center Nov. 21-23 and Nov. 28-30 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. At that time, you can also sign up and pay your membership dues as well.
After the New Year, they will start offering fitness classes.
