Sacred Heart LEGO League brings out students’ creativity

     The Sacred Heart Eagles LEGO League has been hard at it for the past few months, hoping to take their experience to the state competition in February to show off their skills.

   A year ago, Sacred Heart Principal Susan Hucker brought the idea of starting a LEGO League for students at the school. The idea fell on the plate of fourth- and fifth-grade teacher Matt Federspiel.

   “I put it on my back burner,” he admitted of a busy school year last year.

St. John’s Church starts ‘Swaddling Clothes’ to fill a need

     There is a new service offered in Jones County that aims to serve a need for mothers and families with young children.

   “Swaddling Clothes” has opened in the basement of St. John’s Lutheran Church outside of Monticello. The mission of the LCMS-based (Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod) organization “is to share the mercy of Christ with our neighbors through the gifts of clothing, food, friendship, and the forgiving Word of God.”

Weers steps down from Every Child Reads

     There is a new face behind Every Child Reads: Jones County, as long-time coordinator Heather Weers steps down.

   Lori Schulte of Anamosa took over the leadership role in October after Weers served for a little over six years since the organization’s inception.

Starlighters chooses holidaythemed show for 50th season finale

     Tickets are on sale now for Starlighters II Community Theatre's final show of its much celebrated 50th anniversary season.

   "All Through the Night," directed by Diana Jones and assisted by Amber Tew, will debut on the Starlighters' stage this weekend, Dec. 6-8. You can also catch it Dec. 13-15.

Monticello prepares to enjoy ‘Shop Small Saturday’

     Monticello businesses, Monticello Main Street, and the Monticello Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) is preparing for the biggest shopping day of the year…Shop Small Saturday!

   On Saturday, Nov. 30, Main Street and MACC "encourage all businesses to be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.," urged Main Street Director Brian Wolken.

   Monticello's Shop Small Saturday slogan is "Say Hello to Monticello."

Donations sought for Shop with a Cop

   The Jones County Family Council is preparing for the 8th Annual Shop with a Cop event.

   On Monday, Dec. 9, and Monday, Dec. 16, middle school students throughout Jones County will have the opportunity to scour the aisles of Wal-Mart in Anamosa to shop for the holidays alongside a friendly law enforcement officer. The children will be shopping for gifts for their immediate family members and loved ones.

Becker shares innovative history of Camp Courageous

     Charlie Becker, CEO of Camp Courageous, spoke about the history and innovations at Camp on Nov. 17 at the Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center. Becker was one of the weekly “Spark Talk” guest speakers.

   “It's so neat to be on the cutting edge of camps serving people with disabilities. Camps in general are phasing out,” shared Becker.

   Becker was hired in 1980 as the third director of Camp. The first director was Gary Turbes. Becker took over after Bud Ewell left.

Give to Grow grants funds to Parks and Rec

     In October, Monticello Give to Grow announced they had reached their goal of raising $112,500 toward a $75,000 endowment.

   Hitting that benchmark allowed them to give out a $10,000 “Vibrant Monticello” grant.

   Applicants had until Nov. 4 to submit applications.

Community H&S revisits successes in Monticello

     In 2015, Monticello, Iowa, became the very first community in the Midwest chosen to take part in the Orton Community Heart & Soul (H&S) program.

   This was being facilitated by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque (CFGD).

   Pastor Jean Sullivan, with the United Church of Monticello, was hired as the H&S coordinator.

GJCF board elections, annual meeting, Nov. 25

     The Great Jones County Fair Board will hold it’s annual meeting and election of board members on Monday, Nov. 25, at the Jones County Youth Development Center.

   Registration and voting for nominees will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. The meeting will begin promptly at 7 p.m.

   The Fair Board is made up of 22 members. Fifteen of those are elected positions; seven are appointed by different organizations that work hand-in-hand with the fair, such as Parks and Recreation, the Golf Club, the Extension Council, etc.
