Starlighters II Theatre 50th anniversary November update

   To celebrate the Starlighters II Community Theatre’s 50th season each month of 2024, a new voice from the Starlighters’ family will share their insights and memories of the theatre. This month we feature a story written by Steve Nassif.

   I first became involved with Starlighters II in 1978, when a friend invited me to help build set for “The Sound of Music.” I put a few staples in some artificial grass, and 46 years later, I’m still here.

Dusanek highlights innovation at ‘Spark!’ event

     On Nov. 12, the Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center welcomed another speaker as part of its weekly “Spark Talk” series, featuring local innovators sharing their unique stories.

   Dave Dusanek of Monticello, founder of DigiFarm VBN (Virtual Base Network) offered insight into how his company started and how fast it’s grown in just 14 years.

   “I’m just another farm kid from Monticello. I wanted to farm,” he said of his future after high school.

   However, his father wanted him to attend college.

MCSD bond passes

     Voters within the Monticello Community School District (MCSD) showed their support for the construction of a new elementary school on Nov. 5. Needing a super majority plus one vote to pass, the bond vote passed with a total of 60.69 percent (2,115 votes).

Excitement in Monticello for new Theisen’s store

     “The staff is just super excited to finally be open and ready for everybody, with welcome and open arms. It’s been a long-time coming.”

   Excitement is an understatement as Luke Quinlan, the manager of the Monticello Theisen’s Home•Farm•Auto store, and his colleagues opened its new location on S. Main Street at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

   Quinlan has been with the Monticello store since March 2022; with the Theisen’s company overall for just over five years.

GJCF announces Sunday evening entertainment

     The Great Jones County Fair (GJCF) is excited to make another entertainment announcement for the 2025 fair…

   "Roots & Boots: '90s Electric Throwdown" will hit the stage on Sunday, July 20 at 7 p.m.

   The line-up includes three hitmakers who defined country music in the '90s:

   • Sammy Kershaw

   • Aaron Tippin

   • Collin Raye

   Combined, they had over 40 top 10 radio hits and 25 million albums sold.

‘Descendants’ is MHS fall musical

   The Monticello High School Drama Department will present “Disney’s Descendants, the Musical.

   Performance dates and times are Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 16, with separate performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

   Imprisoned on the Isle of the Lost – home of the most infamous villains who ever lived – the teenage children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella De Vil have never ventured off the island, until now.

Lubben Wines raises money for MFD, AFD

     Lubben Vineyards and Wines in Anamosa hosted a successful fundraiser in support of the Anamosa and Monticello Fire Departments, raising $4,000 to be split between the two departments. The event took place during the winery’s annual Harvest Party, featuring community-oriented activities and festive autumn décor.

Mary Lovell LeVan’s grandson traces family roots

     He’d only been to Monticello a few times in his life, yet the community felt familiar, it felt comfortable, it felt like home…

   The name Ace Allgood (born Andrew LeVan Allgood) may not sound familiar to many people around here, until you hear of his family’s surnames: LeVan, Lovell, and Richardson.

   Allgood’s grandmother was Mary Lovell LeVan, as in the Mary Lovell LeVan Renaissance Center in downtown Monticello.

Yeoman shares history of family business at ‘Spark!’ event
