Parks & Rec seeks interest in ‘Adult Olympics’

     Monticello Parks and Recreation (P&R) is capitalizing on the 2024 Summer Olympics, which kick off in just about a week, July 26 to be exact.

   P&R is debuting “Adult Olympics,” a year-round program full of fun, fitness, and community engagement.

   Right now, P&R offers season-long adult programming, including co-ed volleyball, co-ed Chicago slow pitch, pickleball, and lap swimming.

Cruise takes after older brothers as Army veteran

     “My three brothers were all older than me; they were all in the Army. I don’t know why they all chose the Army, but I followed suit.”

   Joe Cruise of Scotch Grove spent his day on May 28 in Washington, D.C., on the 51st Eastern Iowa Honor Flight.

   Accompanying Cruise was his only daughter, Donna (Cruise) Harmon.

Wyoming Fair celebrates 90 years

     The Wyoming Fair in Wyoming, Iowa, is celebrating 90 years this year.

   The Wyoming Fair, which takes place July 12-14 this weekend, is proud of its 90-year legacy.

   To that extent, this year’s Wyoming Fair parade grand marshal is Terry Lineburg, a long-time Wyoming Fair Board member and president.

   “Terry was on the fair board in the mid-1980s and served for 35 years,” recalled another long-time Wyoming Fair Board member, Guy Petersen. “He was president for 12 years.

Seven candidates compete for ’24 GJCF Queen

     One week from now, on Tuesday, July 16, the 2024 Great Jones County fair Queen and Princess will be crowned on stage.

   Before that can happen, though, the seven candidates for Fair Queen took part in the 24th Annual GJCF Queen Contest on July 7.

GJCF offers family-friendly, activities for all ages

     The 172nd Great Jones County Fair for 2024 is fast approaching.

   GJCF Office Manager Abby Jaeger shares some changes to this year’s fair and what fairgoers can expect…

   First, some statistics from the 2023 GJCF:

   • Fairgoers spent $826,269 on food and carnival rides.

   • Overall attendance was approximately 100,000 for the “Five Best Days of Summer.” The grandstand attracted 34,514 fairgoers who attended multiple stage and track performances.
