‘Fidget’ starts work as district’s new therapy dog

   Fidget had her first full day of school Oct. 28.

   The Monticello Community School District’s new therapy dog, a 20-month-old sheepadoodle, officially started work that day, and was an instant hit.

Carpenter Elementary collecting items for food pantry

     Carpenter Elementary School in Monticello will be collecting food and other items for the Monticello Food Pantry.

   Items will be collected in the music room at the school starting Nov. 4 through 29. Any and all donations will be accepted. Participation in this food drive is voluntary.

   They will be accepting non-perishable food items and things such as:

   • Toilet paper

   • Kleenex

   • Toothpaste

   • Toothbrushes

HARDY announced for 2025 GJCF

     There's not time like the present to start thinking about the summer of 2025.

   The Great Jones County Fair (GJCF) has made its first of four concert announcements for 2025… HARDY!

   The country musician and songwriter (Michael Hardy), known as HARDY, will be performing at the GJCF on Saturday, July 19, at 8 p.m.

Above & Beyond reflects on 20 years of service to so many

   Those words were shared by Above & Beyond Home Health and Hospice Care Regional Director of Home Health Operations Dianne Pedrin (former co-owner) as she reflected on the organization’s 20 years in business.

Monticello Give to Grow hits milestone, accepting grant applications

     Monticello Give to Grow is “growing” and wants to give back to the Monticello community.

   It was announced last week that Give to Grow has hit another benchmark in terms of contributions toward its endowment, and with that target goal, they are ready to award a $10,000 grant.

Starlighters to perform two programs at one event

     On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1 and 2, the Starlighters II Theatre Readers’ Theatre Performance Group, directed by Jan Cratsenberg, and Live Radio Theatre Group, directed by Stephanie Hutchinson, will perform their shows together in one event.

Work begins on JCED housing project

     Construction has begun on the new single-family affordable home located at 541 N. Chestnut St. in Monticello.

   In September, Jones County Economic Development (JCED) announced plans to construct a 1,217 square-foot three-bedroom home on the lot that was purchased from the City of Monticello.

   JCED is working with Homes for Iowa, Inc., "a public-private partnership with Iowa Prison Industries." The homes are manufactured near the Newton Correctional Release Facility and brought to the designated sites.

Naab wins poetry prize and prestigious nomination

     “If I can give any advice for writers, keep writing. Always go back and rework it. If you have a passion for it, keep doing it.”

   Hilary Naab of Monticello has been writing poetry since second grade. In fact, her work at that young age was published in her local newspaper in Galena, Ill.

   Just recently, the Iowa Poetry Association, Inc. (IPA) announced that one of Naab’s poems has been published in their “Lyrical Iowa 2024” annual poetry anthology.

   Naab submitted five different poems for the contest.
