Beaman hired as Monticello chamber director

     The Monticello Area Chamber of Commerce (MACC) Board of Directors recently announced the hiring of Megan Beaman as the new executive director.

   Beaman started her new role on June 18.

   “I’m looking forward to strengthening our connection with the businesses owners and the community,” offered Beaman.

   She’s already hit the ground running, having attended the chamber’s Uptown Summer Nights on June 14. She also attended her first Monticello Main Street meeting, as well as an Ambassadors’ meeting.

Coalition seeks donated items for summer garage sale

     The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition will be having their Seventh Annual Summer Garage Sale in late July and early August. This year, the sale will be held in Anamosa at the American Legion meeting space on the lower level of the USDA building, 300 Chamber Ct. It will be held for two weekends in a row.

Introducing the 2024 GJCF Queen candidates…

     Seven young ladies from throughout Jones County are vying for the title of 2024 Great Jones County Queen.

   In roughly two weeks, these young women will be standing on stage at the GJCF, Tuesday, July 16, awaiting the announcement.

   The GJCF Queen Contest will take place on Sunday, July 7, at the Jones County Youth Development Center, beginning at 6 p.m.; doors open at 5:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.

‘My first car…’

   In 1972, at the age of 22, Ellen Strittmatter purchased her very first car, a blue 1964 Mercury Comet.

   "I bought it used for $750," she recalled. "It was not expensive."

Heritage Center invites public to celebrate 1986

     In April, the Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center unveiled the many items that were buried in a time capsule back in 1986 when the City of Monticello celebrated its sesquicentennial (150th anniversary).

Junior Starlighters presents ‘Seussical the Musical’

     The public has one more chance to see Starlighters II Theatre’s “Seussical the Musical” on stage, June 28, 29, and 30. This is the community theatre’s Junior Starlighters’ production.

   Shortly after Starlighters was formed 50 years ago, one of its founders, the late Bob Furino, established Young People’s Theatre (YPT) at Starlighters as a way to introduce community theatre to younger people before they’re exposed to it while in high school.

   In 2017, YPT was revamped as Junior Starlighters.

   Bob Hendricks of Scotch Grove was 16 years old in late 1988 when he bought his first car, a 1979 Pontiac Sunbird.

   “I worked at Fareway and rode my bike to work,” he recalled.

McKeans donate over 2 acres for wetland restoration

     In June 2018, a groundbreaking was held for the first phase of the Wapsipinicon Trail project, a joint project between Jones County Conservation and the City of Anamosa.

   In September 2023, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place, commemorating the completion of the second phase of the $1.6 million trail project that stretches a mile along Shaw Road in Anamosa.

   One of the big donors and supporters of the project from the start was Andy and Connie McKean of Anamosa.

     “Our family has had a great loss by what you have done. I am not going to try and understand why. Our son was a family man, dedicated to his family, work and community. We have been told many times how people were warmed by his quick wit and remarks. Family was always first. He was thinking about providing for his family each day. The impact on this has left an emptiness in our hearts.”
