Hahn’s Honor Flight experience reflects pride in service

     Vietnam Era veteran Jerry Hahn admitted he gets tongue-tied when people thank him for his service to this country.

   “When people thank me, I thank them for thanking me,” he said.

   Following his day-long trip to Washington, D.C. as part of the 53rd Eastern Iowa Honor Flight on Oct. 8, Hahn now has a different outlook…

   “Now I say, ‘It was my pleasure,’” he said of so many people, young and old, coming up to him that day. “It really was my pleasure. I have no regrets.”

Terminal Lance Arms ready to reveal larger, renovated space

     In April 2023, Terminal Lance Arms opened for business in downtown Monticello. A year later, an opportunity came up the owners couldn’t pass up.

   Owners Joe and Jamie Tubbs’ new location at 118 N. Cedar St. is three to four times larger than their previous location (104 S. Cedar St.).

   Terminal Lance Arms is a sporting goods store. They sell outdoor gear and equipment for fishing, camping, and hunting, as well as firearms and ammunition.

Cast announced for Starlighters’ holiday show

     Starlighters II Community Theatre has announced the cast for their 2024 holiday show “All Through the Night.”

   A small group of weary travelers discover the power of the season while trapped in a lonely train station on Christmas Eve in “All Through the Night.” The show is directed by Diana Jones, with assistant director Amber Tew.

   The cast includes:

   Adults

   • John Crosheck as Charlie

   • Dusty Embree as Violet

MVEC linemen help restore power following hurricane

     On Friday afternoon, Oct. 11, four linemen from Maquoketa Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC) returned after a 12-day trip to South Carolina in which they assisted the Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative in restoring power following Hurricane Helene.

   "The hours were long, and the work was hard, but at the end of the day, it was all worth it to see the joy in their members' faces when the lights were back on. We learned that 'Southern hospitality' is a real thing!"

Local innovators to speak during Smithsonian exhibit at Heritage Center

     In last week's Monticello Express, you read about the "Spark! Places of Innovation" Smithsonian Museum exhibit coming to the Monticello Heritage and Cultural Center, Oct. 26 through Dec. 8.

   This is the only site in Eastern Iowa you will be able to catch the exhibit.

   This exhibit, in particular, focuses on innovative ideas in rural America.

Author’s book highlights AWF adoptions

     Dyersville author Darci Werner, a contributing author to a pet anthology titled “Whiskers, Wags, and Woofs” will be hosting a book launch and signing Sunday, Oct. 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Animal Welfare Friends Shelter, 22407 Business Highway 151, Monticello. Book purchases will be at a reduced rate for anyone bringing donations of supplies or monetary funds.

Coalition hosting mental health, substance use speaker

     The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition is sponsoring “A Community Talk Event and Resource Fair on Mental Health and Substance Use” at the Monticello High School on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 5 to 7:30 p.m. during parent-teacher conferences. This event is open to everyone, and especially good for parents, grandparents, and high school students.

Monticello police, schools now using anonymous tip app

     There is a new tool available to public and accredited non-public schools across the State of Iowa that allows the public to submit anonymous school safety concerns.
