Obituaries

Our father, H. Lee Benton, passed peacefully at the age of 93 on Sunday, July 20, 2025, in Thornton Colo. Our family is grateful for the loving care of the Bloom Hospice team and the staff of the memory care unit at Bonaventure of Thornton.

      Janet Engelbart, 86, died Thursday, July 31, 2025, at Pinicon Senior Living.

      Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello, with interment in Wayne Zion Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church.  Goettsch Funeral Home has taken Janet and her family into their care.

Debra Jean Tompkins, 67, of Monmouth, passed away unexpectedly Aug. 4, 2025, at Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

      She was born Nov. 25, 1957, in Clinton, Iowa, to Rodney and Jean (Goddard) Passig. Deb graduated from Central Dewitt High School, Class of 1977. Following graduation she attended Kirkwood Community College. She was united in marriage with Chauncey Tompkins on Nov. 15, 1980. She retired from Walmart after 35 years. She enjoyed spending time doing crafts with her grandchildren, camping and thrifting.

Another angel received her wings July 26, 2025, at 10:15 p.m. at Monticello Nursing and Rehab Facility surrounded by family and friends.

      Lois was born Aug. 24, 1935, daughter of Rhinehart and Elsie Dirks.  Lois married Henry Poppe Sept. 18, 1951. They had three children, Steven Poppe (Rhonda Willmen),  of Lowden, Debra (Robert) Gray, of Center Junction, and Kathy (Jim) Koerperich, of Monticello.
