To the Editor,

   Greta Van Susteran, a journalist with a reputation for painstaking accuracy, recently provided a chart showing inflation since the start of the Biden-Harris Administration:

   Gas +50.5%, Electricity +31.7%, Fuel Oil +49.1%, Airfare +22.6%, Hotels, +51.2%, Groceries +21.6%, Eating Out +23%

Is a new elementary school really needed?

To the Editor,

   There is scheduled to be a bond issue on the November election ballot that I have an issue with. Just because the last one is near being paid off, or paid off, I’m not sure of the exact status, is no reason to go in debt again in my opinion.

To the Editor,

   From Trump to local representative Steve Bradley, these so-called politicians don’t feel like they need to answer to the public with one of the most acceptable discussion formats in America’s democracy – debate!

   What gives? Scared boys?

   Trump has been shamed into keeping with the original date of Sept. 10 for a debate with Kamala Harris on the ABC network. Now he’s waffling back-and-forth, complaining, whining…who knows if he'll even show for the event!

To the Editor,

   School to build $26,500,000 school for K-4 grades. Rationale is to build before costs increase. Wages and income increase at about same rate as construction costs. If cost to build increases, chances are your salary also increases.

   School hired O.P.N. to sell concept of new school. Bone vote pamphlet shows Solon and Monticello will pay similar R.E. tax. Per several websites, Solon has average household income of $116,352, while Monticello’s household income per year is $81,971.

Has it really been 15 years??

   Last week, my daily Facebook memories reminded me that my work anniversary was fast approaching.

   Not that I need a reminder. I started working at The Monticello Express on Aug. 31, 2009. I am embarking on my 16th year of working here! But the reason this date is forever sealed in my memory is because it is also my younger sister's birthday. With just one sibling, I cannot forget her birthday! So every Aug. 31, my family has a lot to be happy about!

To the Editor,

   Do you know where you’re going when you pass away? There are only two options and BOTH are eternal.

   As a Christian, we are called and should be compelled to shout from the rooftops that Jesus died for all sin, to repent, and accept the free gift of salvation. If you have been told you can earn your way to Heaven by being a good person, that is 100 percent incorrect and is a lie from the enemy. Jesus is the only way (John 14:6). You must be reborn (John 3:3, 2 Corinthians 5:17, I Peter 1:3).

To the Editor,

   Having spent 44 years of my life working for local government in Eastern Iowa, I know how very important it is to have good, elected officials. As a former city manager, and an economic development director, I worked with elected officials, regardless of political party. I appreciated officials who put the common good above party. I wanted to work with officials who had good listening skills, could respect differences, were open minded, and who had personal integrity.

Voters, be careful what you ask for

   We are in the home stretch of another presidential campaign, and it is important for voters to be alert for the unintended consequences of candidates’ promises.

   Office-seekers and their supporters like to portray issues in terms of absolutes — as in, my position is the very best way to address this issue; my opponent’s way is all wrong.

   Most of the time, issues are not all black, nor all white. Most of the time, issues involve many shades of gray, meaning there are no simple solutions.
