COLUMN: Middle (school) musings

     So this week I begin running the series of interviews with Monticello Middle School students about their interest in sports, favorite teams and athletes, etc.

     We begin with die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan Mallory McElmeel, 11, who is in sixth grade.

 

     Monticello Express: So I understand you play volleyball, basketball and softball. Which of those is your favorite?

     Mallory McElmeel: I really enjoy playing basketball.

     ME: What do you like about it?

     How exciting for basketball fans in the state of Iowa. The Hawkeye men and women are Big Ten tournament champs. And both Iowa State teams also qualified for the NCAA basketball tournament.

     For the Hawkeye men, winning four games in four days was nothing short of spectacular. This team is on a roll that we haven’t seen for many years. Why all of a sudden? Especially after losing two guys to the NBA and two other guys to the transfer portal?

COLUMN: Home Stretch column to take a little detour

     You may have noticed that in recent weeks (months?) I haven’t written many columns for the paper.

     This may be a blessing in disguise; it keeps readers from having to look at my ugly mug in the paper each week. But it also makes me feel like I’m shirking my duty.

     Fact of the matter is, I’m pretty much out of ideas. If you’ve read my ramblings over the years you probably are tired of my usual mantras.

COLUMN: I'm back!

     After a three-week hiatus, my column is back. While not nearly as famous or impactful as Michael Jordan declaring, “I’m back!” on March 18, 1995, for my few fans, like my mother, some may have actually missed me for those three weeks.

     For the record, she was the only one to mention it and she was part of the reason “On the Mark” went AWOL.

     First off, here’s what happened: Week #1, I decided to skip a week. Week #2, I missed my first Monday at work in years. Monday mornings are when I write my column. More on why I missed a Monday later in this column.

COLUMN: Attracting bluebirds

     Do you have eastern bluebirds in your neighborhood?  If you’re like many, you’ll have to stop and really think. When was the last time you saw one, if at all?

     Did you know that in the early 1900s the bluebird was one of the more common songbirds, nesting in tree cavities and hollow fence posts? Early settlers looked upon the bluebird as one of the time-tested signs of spring.
