Panthers' first two meets help determine goals

The bar has been set for the Monticello High School boys golf team this season.

The Panthers started the year with a team score of 196 in a 40-stroke dual meet home win over Northeast of Goose Lake April 6. But head coach Curt Tauke said he believes the team can score much lower.

“Our team score was very high, but it’s going to take us a while after losing five varsity players off last year’s team,” Tauke said. “Our goal will be to shoot around 170 at year’s end.”

PREVIEW: Panthers seek to fill out varsity lineup

Monticello made history a year ago by qualifying its boys golf team to the state tournament for the first time since 1980.

The Panthers will need to try to make a different kind of history this year, filling the gaps left after their top four golfers from last year graduated.

Three letter-winners are among the 11 boys who went out for the team this year, led by senior Aaron Gearhart, who was the only Panther who consistently played varsity in 2016.

COLUMN: The duck show is done

I always make fun of reality television, especially shows like Dancing with the Stars and The Bachelor. I am not a big fan of Survivor either. But I do have my favorites.

One of those shows is about ready to come to an end, Duck Dynasty. I have been a big fan of the bearded family for quite some time. One of the things that has drawn me into watching Duck Dynasty is the family members seem relatable.

Wildcats travel to Fearing Relays

Maquoketa Valley competed in the Fearing Relays April 4 in Anamosa, and finished in 15^th place with three points.

The Wildcats’ highest finish came from Zak Harbach, who was sixth in the 400. He also took 10^th place out of 58 runners in the 100.

Eagles' times, distances improve

Girls track

Midland scored 52 points and placed sixth in the West Liberty Invitational April 4.

“Overall a pretty good meet for the Midland girls,” head coach Ryan Luensman said. “We are throwing farther each meet, and our times are dropping.

Libertie Uppena had the highest finish for the Eagles, finishing second in the shot put with a distance of 38-foot-0.

“Libertie continues to improve each time she competes,” Luensman said.

PREVIEW: State qualifiers, fast runners on Eagle squad

Two seniors who are two-time state meet qualifiers will lead the Midland High School boys track and field team this season.

Alex Martens, a two-time State qualifying high jumper; and Trace Jensen, who made State last year in the 1,600-meter run; hope to become three-time qualifiers.

“We have a very strong senior class leading the team into this season,” second-year coach Eric Smith said. “We will be leaning on our seniors to get us most of our points.”

Central Park sets Earth Day cleanup

Enjoy the sights and sounds of spring as you visit Central Park and the Central Park Nature Center on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22.

Stop in at the Nature Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and help clean up Central Park.
