Monti splits with Mustangs at Legacy Lanes

BOYS BOWLING

   Hosting Independence on Jan. 19, the Monticello boys bowling got out to a 200-pin lead after the individual round, then outlasted the Mustangs in the baker games to take a 3,067-2,981 win.

   Quinn Thomas fired a 446 series (181-265) and Gavin Hinrichs shot 442 (195-247) to lead the Panthers.

   Baker games of 232, 245 and 214 kept the Panthers ahead of the Mustangs.

JV BOYS WRESTLING

   At the Solon JV Wrestling Invitational on Jan. 19, the Monticello JV boys wrestling team came away with four second-place finishers and three third-place finishers.

   Dominic Gray, Cooper Ehrisman, Cole Kraus and Eli Moestchen led the Panthers, all going 2-1 in their round-robin weight classes.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

   The Midland girls basketball team split a pair of games last week, picking up a 37-21 win over Prince of Peace on Jan. 20, before falling to Marquette Catholic, 63-26, on Jan. 22.

   The Eagles led the Irish by just two, 15-13, after the first half, before turning up the defense in the second half. The Irish managed just eight second-half points, as the Eagles put up 11 points in each quarter to take the 16-point win.

   Battling for the top spot in the division, the Monticello boys basketball team picked up a huge win over Northeast on Jan. 13.

   “I told the kids in the locker room right before we took the court, that a good start would be key. It’s always been a tough place to play,” Panther coach Tim Lambert said.

Panthers top Isaac Newton Christian Academy at May City Bowl

BOYS BOWLING

   Bowling at May City Bowl in Cedar Rapids on Jan. 15, the Monticello boys bowling team took down Isaac Newton Christian Academy 2,855-2,245.

   Gavin Hinrichs led the Panthers with a 424 series, rolling games of 204 and 220. Brayden Todd shot 401 (179-222) and Aidan Woodward shot 384 (149-235) for the Panthers’ top-three scores.

BOYS BASKETBALL

   The Monticello JV boys basketball team has stacked up the wins this season, picking up four more in the last two weeks.

   The Panthers started with a 56-30 win over West Liberty on Jan. 5 before earning victories over Camanche, 47-31, on Jan. 6, a 46-22 over Anamosa on Jan. 9 and a 47-39 win over Northeast on Jan. 13.

   The Panthers sit at 10-1 on the season.
