Wilson wins conference championship in Wilton

   Despite missing the first half of the season due to injury, Panther freshman Wyatt Wilson wrestled his way to a River Valley Conference title at 126-pounds.

   “Wyat had a great tournament,” Panther coach Ryan Luensman said. “We’re very excite for Wyatt and how he competed. He has already put his name into the history books and we are very proud of him.”

   At the RVC Tournament on Jan. 31 in Wilton, Wilson went 3-0 to take first.

Monticello 51, Beckman 35

   In the first of three home games of the week for the Monticello girls basketball team, the Panthers picked up a 51-35 win over Beckman on Jan. 27.

   The Panthers opened up a 13-3 lead after the first quarter and didn’t look back, leading 25-10 at halftime and 42-14 after three quarters.

   The Blazers outscored Monti 21-9 in the fourth frame, but the Panthers built a big enough lead to outlast the visitors by double digits.

GIRLS BOWLING

   At the River Valley Conference bowling meet on Jan. 26 at Imperial Lanes in Camanche, the Monticello girls bowling team finished fifth in the five-team event.

   The Panthers 1,451 in the individual round, led by a 313 series from Jorja Jacobs. Jacobs rolled games of 161 and 152 to lead the Panthers.

   Nessa Eitel followed with a 305 series, rolling games of 166 and 139. Hannah Butterworth rolled a 294 series with games of 128 and 166 to round out the Panthers top three bowlers.

Monticello's Taylor punches ticket to state

Monticello senior Izzy Taylor will once again wrestle in Coralville after winning the 170-pound bracket at the Iowa Class 1A Region 8 state-qualifying meet last week.

Taylor (29-9) began her quest at the meet in Williamsburg with two byes. In the quarterfinal, she pinned Johnelle Gliem (25-15), of Baxter, in 42 seconds. The semifinal pitted her against Center Point-Urbana’s Tara Crowley (33-16), who put up a fight but was ultimately pinned by Taylor in 3:12.

Monticello earns season sweep over Cascade

Monticello 49, Cascade 41

   Hosting Cascade for round two of the season series, the Monticello boys basketball team took the sweep, topping the Cougars 49-41 behind 20 points and six threes from Alex Jamison.

   Cascade led 18-17 after one quarter and then by two, 28-26, at the break, but the Panther defense turned up the heat in the second half.

Ballou earns title at Tri-Rivers Tournament

BOYS WRESTLING

   Gearing up for the district tournament, the Midland boys wrestling team traveled to North Cedar High School for the Tri-Rivers Conference Tournament on Jan. 31. Dane Ballou led the Eagles, going 3-0 to take first at 175.

   Three pins did the trick for the Midland junior. Ballou pinned North Cedar’s Bentley Hormann in 18 seconds in the quarterfinals, Walter Rogan, of North Linn, in 13 seconds in the semifinals, and Lisbon’s Ryder Meeks in one minute in the first-place match.

   The Midland boys basketball team picked up its fourth win of the season after a narrow 61-59 victory over North Cedar on Jan. 27 in Wyoming.

Panthers outlast Bellevue, fall in Anamosa

   A hot start and a big fourth quarter helped the Monticello girls basketball team top Bellevue, 45-41, on Jan. 20 in Monticello. The win splits the season series, as the Comets won the first matchup in Bellevue.

   “We did a much better job controlling the tempo of the game and not let their press bother us as much,” Monti coach Donnie Kremer said. “We were able to get into our offense a lot easier, and I thought we defended much better in the half court. We identified their shoots and kept them within reach for most of the game.”

Panthers drop season series to Comets, bounce back against Blue Raiders

   After falling in its first matchup against Bellevue on the road, the Monticello boys basketball team dropped game two of the season series to the Comets, 46-43, on Jan. 20 in Monticello.

   Bellevue, ranked no. 7 in Class 1A, led 18-12 after one quarter before taking a 30-21 lead into halftime.
