Amanda Brenneman, Monticello school board

Amanda Brenneman

Personal history: I was born and raised in a tiny town in Maine, but have lived over half of my life in Monticello, Iowa. My fabulous husband, Josh, and I have an amazing daughter, Bailey. Josh and I also take care of an individual with special needs in our home and he is an integral part of our family. I received my nursing degree in 2006 from the University of Iowa and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice in 2018 from Clarke University. I am blessed to work as a family practice provider at MercyCare in Marion. My previous time in Monticello was serving the wonderful campers at Camp Courageous.

Why did you decide to re-run for school board? This community has an amazing school district. Bailey has been using the public school system since pre-school and she has had a great experience. I decided to run four years ago as a way to give back to this community. I am seeking re-election for the same reason. The last four years of service have been very rewarding.

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the Monticello School District? The world is a different place than when I attended school in the ‘90s. The youth of today are faced with different challenges than previous generations. Technology and artificial intelligence have changed the future of workplaces requiring changes in the way curriculum is taught. Children are exposed to violence and drugs on TV/social media at very early ages and they do not have the mental ability to process the way adults do. These were all things families and school districts could help shield from our children a decade or two ago. The district also faces finding and retaining top-notch educators and supporting staff. However, the Monticello School District has worked hard to stay ahead of this challenge. I believe they are excelling compared to some surrounding school districts.

What is your position on a future central campus and bonding for a new PreK-4 building? The elementary schools are in need of updating. I am in favor of starting the investigation process to see how much a new building will cost on the central campus. Then the school board will work to make the best decision for the community. I am open to the community’s thoughts.
