The two Anamosa State Penitentiary inmates who caused the death of two staff members on March 23 were formally charged on March 25.

Both Thomas Woodard and Michael Dutcher were charged with:

     • Two counts of 1st degree murder

     • 2nd degree kidnapping-armed with a dangerous weapon

The 1st degree murder charges stem from the deaths of Correctional Officer Robert McFarland and Registered Nurse Lorena Schulte. The kidnapping charge is related to the defendants restraining a third ASP employee, Lorie Matthes. The attempted murder charge stems from injuries inmate McKinley Roby endured from the defendants while attempting to render aid to McFarland and Schulte.
