Seth Ballou relied on the basics to win the Monticello Men’s Club Golf Tournament July 31-Aug. 1 at the Monticello Golf Club.

“It was mostly the driver, hitting it straight,” Ballou said. “Just fairways and greens was really the only thing. Pretty boring golf, to tell you the truth.”

It worked for the 31-year-old Monticello native, who recently moved back to town after several years away.

Ballou shot 67-67–134 to win the tournament by five strokes over Chance Manternach, who had 139. Reid Hall and Dustin Hall both shot 140 – Reid Hall won a cardback tie-breaker to finish third – and Mike Wennekamp was fifth with 143.

He took a three-shot lead after the first day, then extended his margin as Sunday’s play went on.

Though Ballou has become a key player in Monticello men’s golf – he finished third overall in last year’s Eastern Iowa Golf Association (EIGA) tournament in Tipton – winning tournaments outright had been elusive, until Sunday.

“The last thing I remember winning was the Monti Junior Open, like 15 years ago,” Ballou said.

He hopes to contribute to the Monticello team again when it hosts this year’s EIGA Tournament Aug. 14-15.

“It’s a battleground to make the team out here,” Ballou said. “We have so many good golfers.”
