Beckman ends Panthers' season

Monticello’s boys soccer players knew they were in for a challenge when they faced Dyersville Beckman, the ninth-ranked team in Class 1A.

The teams met in a sub-state first round match May 19 in Dyersville, and the Trailblazers scored a 10-0 victory to end the Panthers’ season.

The match was halted by the 10-goal rule with about four minutes left on the clock. For Monticello, that was an improvement; last year Beckman scored its 10th goal against Monticello early in the second half.

“I know it sounds odd,” Monticello coach Jarrett Easton said, “but I’m really proud of them for their effort all season and willingness to compete when the odds were stacked against them.

“It was a good effort all around, and we’ll really miss senior Evan Martensen.”

The Panthers finished with an 0-10 record.
