Blaine Brighton of Monticello earned an individual berth in the Class 2A District Meet, during sectional competition May 8 at the Monticello Golf Club.

As a team, the Panthers finished fourth, missing out on district qualifying. Oelwein (with a team score of 317) and MFL MarMac (317) were first and second and advanced. Sumner-Fredericksburg was third with 322, and Monticello was fourth with 323.

“We were right there all day,” Monticello coach Curt Tauke said. “There were some pretty quality teams, similar to us. We were hoping the home course advantage would give us the advantage that we needed. We did improve; it just wasn’t enough.”

Brighton shot 40-37–77 to finish fourth individually. The top two teams and top two individuals who are not part of qualifying teams all move on to districts; Brighton was the second individual qualifier.

“Blaine did not have a great first round, but what you like to see from your players is to hang in there, keep competing, and grinding away,” Tauke said. “He was 12th after the first round, and finished fourth.”

Brighton was scheduled to compete in the district meet May 14 at Fox Ridge in Dike, after this paper went to press.

Easton Prull had a round of 79; he shot a career best 37 on the front nine. Lucas Foust shot an 80.

Prior to the sectional meet, the Panthers had a home dual meet against Camanche, which Monticello won 157 to 193.

Brighton was medalist with a 37, and Cole Welter was runner-up with a 39. Lincoln Verhagen shot 40, and Foust had a 41.

“It was a pretty strong showing,” Tauke said. “Our goal was to put a number up there and see if we could (beat 160). It was our best nine-hole score of the year.”

The entire JV squad played, and was divided into three teams. Camanche won the JV meet with a score of 209, edging one of the Panther teams (also 209) by the fifth-player tie-breaker.

Talan Long led the Panther JV with a 43.

“I’m looking for good things down the line from him, if he continues to work hard in the offseason,” the coach said.
