Busy Eagles play 13 games
Softball
A hectic recent softball schedule saw the Midland Eagles play 13 games in 10 days, winning four of them. It put the Eagles 7-15 overall, including 3-11 in the Tri-Rivers Conference.
On June 2, the Eagles split a doubleheader at Starmont. In game one the Eagles won 10-9. Anna Bartels pitched the first six innings and Sophia Raubs pitched the seventh. Bartels had two hits including a triple, drove in three runs, scored once and got hit by two pitches. Gracie Harrington and Allison Paulsen had a double each.
In game two the Eagles lost 13-8. Paulsen pitched the full game for the Eagles. Bartels had two hits with a double, drove in four runs and scored once. Paulsen, Isabelle Rickets, Raubs and Taelynn Gravel had two hits each. Gravel had a triple and drove in three runs.
On June 3, the Eagles lost both games of a doubleheader at Lisbon. In game one the Eagles lost 12-0 in five innings. Bartels started the game and pitched four innings and Raubs pitched the fifth inning. The Eagles were unable to get a hit.
In game two, the Eagles lost 18-8 in six innings. Paulsen pitched the full six innings. At the plate, Paulsen had two hits, both doubles, drove in four runs and scored once. Harrington and Gracie Franzen had two hits each in the game.
On June 7, the Eagles lost both games of a doubleheader at home against Edgewood-Colesburg. In game one the Eagles lost 16-5. Raubs, Bartels and Paulsen all pitched in the first game. Paulsen had three hits, two being doubles, drove in four runs, walked once and scored once.
In game two, the Eagles lost 9-3. Raubs pitched the complete game. Harrington had two hits, both doubles, drove in two runs and scored once. Paulsen had two hits, one double and drove in one run.
At Springville June 9, Midland lost by scores of 4-3 and 14-2, the latter in four innings. The Orioles won on a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh in the first game. The Eagles did have eight hits, including a 2-for-3 effort from Isabelle Ricketts, and 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs from Raubs. Bartels pitched all seven innings and took the loss.
Springville scored 12 runs over the first three innings of the second game. Midland had three hits, including a double and two RBIs from Bartels.
Midland got back in the win column with a doubleheader sweep at MFL MarMac, winning 22-4 in three innings and 17-13. In the first game, the Eagles scored 17 runs in the top of the third inning. Midland had 15 hits, led by Paulsen, who was 4-for-4 with three doubles and five RBIs. Getting two hits each were Harrington, Raubs, Ricketts, Bartels and Alyvia Streets. Harrington had a triple and finished with seven RBIs. Bartels drove in four runs, and pitched a five-hitter for the win.
The Eagles scored in every inning of the second game, while collecting 15 hits. Paulsen was 3-for-6 with two doubles and four RBIs. Harrington, Franzen and Streets each had two hits. Harrington and Franzen doubled. Raubs had three RBIs. Paulsen, Raubs and Bartels shared pitching duties, with Raubs getting the win.
On June 11, Midland won one of three games in the Calamus-Wheatland tournament. The Eagles started with a 7-0 loss to Northeast of Goose Lake. Bartels went 2-for-3.
Against Clinton, the Eagles picked up a 13-7 win, doing all of its scoring in the first four innings. Raubs was the winning pitcher, and went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs at the plate. Bartels was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Sophia Coates and Paulsen each knocked in two runs.
Midland then lost 7-4 to Cal-Wheat, which rallied from an early 3-1 deficit. Harrington had a big game at the plate for the Eagles, 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Franzen went 3-for-4. Bartels pitched and took the loss.
Baseball
Midland won three of five recent baseball games, to come away with a record of 3-3 in the Tri-Rivers Conference, 3-8 overall.
The Eagles opened the month of June with a 7-2 loss at Starmont. Midland had seven hits. Kaleb Westphal batted 2-for-4 with a double. Warren Etten, pitching in relief of Jamisen Dodge, took the loss.
Midland then reeled off three straight wins, starting with a doubleheader sweep of Clinton Prince of Peace June 8 in Wyoming. A four-run first inning boosted the Eagles in the first game, and they went on to win 4-2. Kael Cress pitched five innings to get the win, giving up two hits and striking out four. Etten and Dodge pitched in relief. The Eagles had just two hits, but took advantage of nine walks.
In the second game, Midland won 13-3 in six innings. The Eagles broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning and six in the sixth. Anthony Harrington, Zain Sauer and Etten shared pitching duties; Harrington got the win.
