Cubs, 3-0, top Rickardsville twice

These Monticello Cubs are on a roll.

Two semi-pro baseball games against Rickardsville last week resulted in two wins, lifting the Cubs to a 3-0 start to the season.

The games were remarkably similar, with Monticello rallying from behind in the late innings.

In the first game, an Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League contest played June 2 at Rickardsville, the Cubs trailed 6-2 through five innings.

Then came the top of the sixth, when Andrew Mescher’s grand slam keyed a five-run inning that put the Cubs ahead, and pitcher A.J. Reuter closed out a 7-6 victory that gave Monticello a 2-0 EIHL record.

A bases loaded walk to Greg Kraus with two out in that decisive sixth inning set up Mescher’s eventual game-winning blast.

“We started off slow but kept battling, staying in at bats, making good defensive plays and were able to get enough momentum our way to get a lead at the end,” Cubs player-manager Tanner Felton said.

Mescher had two homers in the game, including a solo shot in the top of the first as the game’s first batter. A.J. Reuter batted 2-for-3.

Tyler Felton pitched four innings in relief of Mescher, the starter, before A.J. Reuter came in to work the last two innings.

On June 7, in a first round game of the Farley Tournament, the Cubs again found themselves trailing Rickardsville, this time 3-1 after four innings, before rallying for a 7-3 win.

That victory advanced the Cubs to the quarterfinal round; they were scheduled to play Worthington June 8, after this paper went to press. The winner will play in a semifinal game June 12 at 6:45 p.m.

Monticello scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to tie Sunday’s game 3-3.

Then, in the seventh, the Cubs brought home four runs, all after two were out. Mescher singled to drive in the first run, Michael Reuter hit a two-run double, and Tanner Felton singled to bring Reuter home.

“Coming off a long day Saturday from our 13th annual Monti Cubs Best Shot Golf Tournament, things were a little slow to begin with,” Tanner Felton said. “But I was very happy with the way we stuck in the whole game and kept grinding.

“Our defense was solid and helped our pitchers be successful. Michael Reuter and Andrew Mescher both had a big day for us hitting. Matt Holmes and Tyler Felton had some great at bats for us as well.”

Mescher, Michael Reuter and Holmes all went 2-for-4 at the plate; Michael Reuter had two doubles. Parker Kray pitched the first four innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits. A.J. Reuter threw the last three to pick up a win, shutting out Rickardsville on four hits and striking out five.

“It was great to win our first tournament game of the year, and we hope to keep it rolling,” Tanner Felton said.
