Cubs get first round win in Dyersville Tournament

     Monticello got strong boosts from its pitching, hitting and defense in the opening round of the Dyersville Semi-Pro Baseball Tournament July 23.

     Kyle Wright and Ryan Manternach combined on a two-hit shutout as the Cubs blanked Placid 8-0 in five innings.

     They were backed by an offense that contributed nine hits, and a defense that made no errors.

     After taking a 3-0 lead in the second inning, Monticello scored four times in the third, including a two-run homer by Tanner Felton. Tyler Felton went 2-for-3 at the plate. Andrew Mescher was 1-for-1 with a double, four runs batted in, and three stolen bases.

     Wright pitched four innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. Manternach pitched the fifth inning, giving up no hits and fanning one.

     The Cubs (7-11) were scheduled to face Dyersville in the tournament quarterfinals July 28.

     Prior to the tournament game, Monticello played a nine-inning home game against Rickardsville July 21, and came up on the short end of an 8-4 score, as the A’s scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning.

     The Cubs had erased a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, with RBIs by A.J. Reuter and Tanner Felton accounting for two of them.

     The 3-2 lead held up until the top of the ninth inning, when Rickardsville scored six times. Monticello got one run back in the bottom half, but couldn’t get closer than the final four-run deficit.

     Monticello had eight hits. Matt Holmes was 3-for-5 at the plate, Tanner Felton went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Mescher was also 2-for-4.

     Will Angstman was the Cubs’ starting pitcher, working 6 1/3 innings and allowing two runs while striking out 10. Parker Kray pitched in relief and took the loss.
