Cubs pick up first win

     Two big innings, eight runs in the second and four in the third, pushed the Monticello Cubs semi-pro baseball team to its first victory of the season.

     The Cubs wound up with a 13-10 triumph over Dyersville June 3 at Dailey Field in Monticello.

     Trailing 6-0 early, the Cubs (1-6) rallied to take an 8-6 lead in the second. Tyler Felton, Greg Kraus, Andrew Mescher, Michael Reuter, A.J. Reuter and Tanner Felton all had RBIs in the inning.

     In the third, a two-run double by A.J. Reuter and a two-run homer by Tanner Felton gave the Cubs a 12-10 lead.

     In all, Monticelloo had 11 hits. Tyler Felton was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Getting two hits apiece were Michael Reuter, Tanner Felton and Kraus. A.J. Reuter and Tanner Felton each finished with three RBIs.

     A.J. Reuter was the winning pitcher, working the first four innings. Kyle Wright pitched the final three innings, allowing no runs and striking out eight, and earned a save.

     Two earlier games didn’t go as well for the Cubs. On May 26, Monticello rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but came up just short in a 9-8 loss. Tyler Felton and Kraus each had two hits in that one. Starting pitcher Tanner Felton took the loss.

     Then, Monticello played host to Cascade June 2, and the Reds pulled away for a 7-1 victory. Cascade led 3-1 through four innings before scoring four in the fourth. The Cubs were held to five hits, although Mescher went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in the first inning.
