Cubs win one of four

     Monticello played four games in six semi-pro baseball games last week, winning one of them and reaching the Rickardsville Tournament semifinals before falling.

     The Cubs (1-9 league, 6-14 overall) opened the week with a quarterfinal win over Zwingle in the Rickardsville Tournament, by a score of 2-0.

     A.J. Reuter pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Monticello scored just two runs on seven hits, but those were enough. Lucas Stutt drove in the first one on a sacrifice fly in the second inning, scoring Kyle Huxford. In the third, Kyle Huxford hit an RBI double, part of his 2-for-2 night.

     “A.J. was dialed in the entire game,” Monticello player-manager Garett Hanken said. “Hux swung the bat well.”

     The win placed Monticello in the tournament’s semifinal round against host Rickardsville July 20. Rickardsville took advantage of a makeshift Cubs lineup, winning 8-0. A single by Ryan Manternach was the Cubs’ only hit. Starting pitcher Tyler Felton took the loss.

     “We ran into some tough weather, tough pitching, and the Great Jones County Fair,” Hanken said.

     Monticello returned to Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League play with a doubleheader at Worthington, losing the first game 4-1 and the second one 12-1 (five innings).

     In the opener, A.J. Reuter’s RBI single produced the only Monticello run. Tanner Felton batted 2-for-2. A.J. Reuter and Derek Huxford shared pitching duties, with Reuter taking the loss.

     “We hung around and had our chances, but came up short,” Hanken said.

     Monticello had an early 1-0 lead in the second game, but Worthington scored seven runs in the second inning and five more in the third to take charge. The Cubs used four pitchers, with starter Derek Huxford taking the loss. Michael Reuter batted 2-for-3 for Monticello.

     The Cubs have a busy slate again this week, with a July 26 game at Cascade at 7 p.m., a game against Peosta in the first round of the Dyersville Tournament July 28 at 8:30 p.m.; and a home game against Cascade Sunday, July 30 at 1 p.m.
