Getting outdoors has started to work to the benefit of the Monticello boys track and field team.

That proved most evident, to this point, at the Ira Dunsworth Invitational April 3 in Davenport.

There, the Panthers had top-four finishes in nine events, including all seven of its relays, while recording a fifth place team finish against mostly larger schools.

Monticello also double-scored in three individual events.

“We have been competing well in our first outdoor meets, even with the cold weather,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said.

The Panthers were runner-up in three events: Lincoln Schneiter in the discus, and the shuttle hurdle and 4x400 relay teams.

Taking third place were Aedan Althoff in the 3,200, and the 4x100 relay. In fourth were the 4x200, sprint medley, distance medley and 4x800 relay teams.

In all, the Panthers scored 42 of their 72 points in relays.

Some more notes from coach Williams:

   • “Lincoln Schneiter opened his outdoor discus season with a big PR (personal record).”

   • “Bryce McDonald made the freshman all-time list with his first try in the 400 hurdles.”

   • “Grant Gassman had a good start in the long jump.”

Earlier in the week, Monticello traveled to Van Horne to compete in the Benton Community Early Bird Meet. The Panthers scored 27 points to finish 10th.

The highest finish for Monticello was fourth, by the shuttle hurdle relay team. The Panthers were also fifth in the sprint medley and distance medley relays.
