Durant sweeps Panther teams
Monticello High School bowling coach Brian Meyer put it bluntly.
“Durant was not a good trip,” he said.
The Panther bowling teams traveled to Idle Hour Lanes in Durant, and came away with a pair of losses. Both the boys and girls are now 1-1 on the season.
Durant won the boys’ match 2700 to 2391; and took the girls’ event 2058 to 1908.
Meyer said both teams struggled with the lanes at Idle Hour, but added that it shouldn’t serve as an excuse.
“It’s the same for everybody,” he said. “It’s a level playing field, even if you don’t like it. The lanes will tell you how to play. And if it doesn’t match up to what you want to do, you have to adapt to that.”
Despite the final scores, there were some bright spots. In the boys’ match, Zach Reuter rolled a 256 first game, and Baylor Holub had a 222. Brendan Pasker and Kyle Arduser had second game scores of 178 and 172, respectively.
But Durant won the individual portion of the match by 197 pins, and outscored the Panthers in Baker bowling 868 to 756 to clinch the win.
“Durant exposed some weaknesses of ours,” Meyer said. “We knew we had some swing problems.”
The girls were led by Nora Sperfslage, who rolled 153-151–304 in the two game series. Cadence Olson had a 259 series, and Emma Schwendinger came in with 257.
“It was a really nice improvement for Nora,” coach Meyer said. “We put a wrist brace on her, and it firmed up her release. Now she’s hooking the ball and getting good motion.”
Overall, though, the individual portion proved decisive for the Wildcats. Durant won that 1393 to 1261 to take a 132-pin lead into the five-game Baker round.
Meyer said the girls showed improvement as the meet progressed.
“We only lost baker by 18 pins,” he said. “So by Baker they figured it out a little bit.”
The Panthers are scheduled to have back-to-back home matches Dec. 19 and 20, against Bellevue Monday and West Delaware Tuesday.
