In the first 27 years of the Monticello Invitational Boys Golf Tournament, no Panther golfer had ever earned medalist honors.

   The 28th edition was different.

Lucas Foust fired a round of 37-37–74 to finish first at the tournament, held April 30 at the Monticello Golf Club.

Foust birdied the final hole of the tournament to clinch the win by two strokes over Calvin Andresen of Marion.

“He played a good round,” Monticello coach Curt Tauke said of the Panther senior. “He had his full complement of good shots, that’s for sure.”

The Panthers finished fifth as a team, shooting 330, finishing behind Marion (311), Cascade (316), Dyersville Beckman (322) and Tipton (327).

“Those four teams are really competitive,” Tauke said. “It was a preview of what we might see in the sectional.”

That meet, to be held May 14 at Tipton, will include Cascade, Beckman and Tipton.

“We were right there,” the coach said, “only eight strokes off of Beckman.

Parker Johnson shot an 80. Luke Welter and Carson Lambert rounded out the team scoring, each with 88.

Earlier, the Panthers lost a heartbreaker in a dual meet at home against Cascade, by one stroke, 170 to 171.

Monticello was ultra-consistent as a team. Foust shot 42, while Carson Lambert, Welter and Johnson each carded a 43.

“Cascade is really talented, and had a lot of experience coming back,” Tauke said. “The conditions affected a lot. It was so windy. I was happy with the way the kids hung in there and battled.

“It was a good, competitive round for us, and Cascade didn’t have their best game. You can’t assume anything.”
