Grant money available for water testing and more

     Grant money from the Iowa Department of Public Health is still available for this fiscal year ending June 30, 2021, for the following:

     • Water testing private water wells (may be limited)

     • Plugging abandoned private water wells

     • Plugging abandoned cisterns

     • Reconstruction of private water wells

     To qualify for well plugging, the work must be performed by an Iowa DNR certified pump installer or well driller. Reconstruction work must be done by a certified well driller and not have high nitrate problems.

     Paperwork must be submitted by June 25, 2021 to: Jones County Environmental Services Office, 105 Broadway Place, Suite 11, Anamosa, IA 52205.

     This department recommends yearly water testing. To schedule a water test, call the office between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Homeowners may have their well tested once a year, free of charge, provided grant money is still available. If for a real estate transfer, there may be a fee. Call for more information.

     Short-term radon kits are also available in the office.
