Home meets bring out strong results

A lot of plusses came out of a pair of Monticello home boys track and field meets last week.

   In particular, the varsity co-ed meet April 17 at Dean Nelson Field, went well for the hosts, despite the fact the Panthers had a fourth-place team finish.

   “This was our best meet so far,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said.”We always compete well at home.”

   That held true in the junior varsity meet Monticello hosted April 14, as well.

   At the varsity meet Thursday, the Panthers scored 116 points in the meet, a total that included wins in six events.

   Those included triumphs in the 400-meter dash by Grant Gassman in 55:18, the 800 by Mace Schnoor in 2:09.16, two wins from Aedan Althoff, in the 1,600 (5:09.61) and the 3x200 (10:23.66), and victories in both the 4x800 and sprint medley relays.

   Other factors, according to coach Williams: “Mace Schnoor had personal bests in the 4x800 and his open 800. Our throwing crew had a good night, with a lot of personal records.”

   In Monday’s JV meet, no team scores were kept, but Monticello scored wins in the 800 with Nicholas Schrader, 2:20.29; in the 1,600 with MacKendrick Burkle, 5:20.30; in the 400 hurdles with Bryce McDonald, 1:03.06; in the high jump with Gavin Hinrichs, 5-4; in the discus with Ryker Hein, 109-1; and in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

   “Gavin Hinrichs had a season best in the high jump,” the coach said. “Our younger guys are starting to compete up to their abilities.”

   Monticello had one other varsity meet last week, taking fifth place in the Saber Relays April 15 at Central DeWitt.

   Lincoln Schneiter emerged a winner in the discus, at 139-foot-4. Althoff was second in the 1,60, and the 4x800 relay was third.

   “Tate Jesenovec made the (school) all-time list with his time in the 400 low hurdles,” coach Williams said. “Grant Gassman keeps getting better with each meet. He has become one of our best 400 runners.”
