Margaret "Peg" Cashman April 20, 1937 - June 26, 2025

Margaret (Peg) Cashman was born in Dubuque, Iowa on April 20, 1937 and died at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines, Iowa on June 26, 2025.

Peg was a life-long farmer with her husband, Maurice, on their dairy farm in Castle Grove Township near Monticello.  She raised six children teaching them the value of hard work, the benefit of an education, and the value of a dollar.

Peg and Maurice moved to Kalona in 2000 where they made their retirement.  They enjoyed living near and learning from the Amish community.

Peg spent her final years at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines.  She made many close friends with the staff and fellow community members during her time there.  Peg’s family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care their mom received while at Scottish Rite.

Left to remember her are six children, Maurie (Rosemary), Michael (Julie Phillips), and Maria Cashman (Darci Axmear), all of Cedar Rapids, Michelle Knott of Altoona, Monica (Henry) Camarin of Olathe, Kans. and Meg (John) Anthofer of Des Moines.  She is survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.   Peg is survived by nine siblings, Sister Dorothy Schwendinger, Richard (Diane) Schwendinger, Rea (Cheryl) Schwendinger, Guy (Rosemarie) Schwendinger, Jeanne Schwendinger, Ann Jenkins, Pat (Dianne) Schwendinger, Mary (Ed Weaver) Schwendinger, and Kevin (Lynn) Schwendinger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice; her parents, Louis and Levina Schwendinger; her son-in-law, Steve Knott; and her brother Gregg Schwendinger.

Mom loved quilting.  She spent many hours in fabric stores and in her chair creating and designing beautiful quilts that her family will cherish.  She loved following the news and was always ready for a rousing discussion about the state of the world.  She loved gardening, feeding her family from the huge garden on the farm and raising flowers at her home in Kalona.  Above all, Mom loved her children and her family.

Mass of Chrisitan Burial was held at 11 a.n. Monday, June 30, 2025 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello, with interment in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Castle Grove.  Friends called after 9 a.m. at the church.   Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello has taken Peg and her family into their care.  Donations may be made to the Monticello Food Bank.
