Marlene Chapman, 91, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at St. Luke Catholic Church in Hopkinton, interment followed in the Hopkinton Cemetery. A Parish Vigil service was held at the visitation at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024, at the church. Visitation concluded at 7 p.m. on Monday and resumed at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning until the service time. Goettsch Funeral Home in Monticello is entrusted with arrangements. Surviving are her two children, Don (Shelley) and Kathy Chapman; three grandchildren, Mat (Nicole) Chapman, Dillon (Nicole) Chapman, Bre (Chase) Chapman; her brother, Tom (Donna) DeShaw; and her brother-in-law, Ronnie Wolfe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Jean Wolfe; her brother and sister-in-law, Donnie (Margie) DeShaw; and a nephew, Terry DeShaw.
Marlene Ann DeShaw was born on Sept. 23, 1932, in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Perry and Regina DeShaw. Marlene graduated from Buck Creek School in 1950 and subsequently worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. On March 17, 1953, she married Dorrance "Smokey" Chapman at St. Luke Catholic Church. The couple operated Double D Trucking out of Sand Springs. Marlene served as a Jailer for Delaware County for 20 years, retiring in 2010.
Marlene cherished baking cookies and brownies for her grandchildren, family, and friends. She also acted as the designated "grandma taxi" for them until they could drive. In 1999, Marlene fulfilled her lifelong dream of traveling to Australia and New Zealand.
Marlene’s kindness, generosity, and contributions touched the lives of many and she will be deeply missed.
