Mary J. Tschantz, 93, of Monticello, passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, at Anamosa Care Center in Anamosa.
Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2025, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Monticello. Funeral services will commence at 11 a.m. at the church, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Pastor Dave Raemisch will officiate.
Mary was born on Jan. 18, 1932, at home in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Allen and Rachel (Leggett) Reyner. She was married in 1949 by the justice of the Peace in Jones County. After several years of raising six children, she divorced and married John Tschantz in 1980.
Throughout her life, Mary worked at several places such as John McDonald Hospital, Krysan Bakery, Monticello Nursing Home, McNeill Hardware and Barnhart Roofing. In her free time, she loved listening to her family’s live music, playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their activities, playing all kinds of games, especially when she would win and playing Annie Annie Over.
Survivors include her children, Laurie (Dwight) Young, Dennis (Debra) Chapman, Lonnie (Debbie) Chapman, Tammy Sutterman and Sheree (Keith) Doyle; grandchildren, Jeff (Sue) Chapman, Nikki Chapman, Shantry (Carol) Young, Dustin (Angela) Young, Katie (Angus) Farrowe, Karen (Justin) Verhagen, Clayton (Janelle) Chapman, Ginger (Justin) Philburn, Emily (Will) Culver, Jennifer (Mark) Speltz, Clint (Andrea) Chapman, Amber (Brian) Rance, Nash (Isabel Williams) Sutterman, Jacob (Tetiana Fliashovska) Doyle, Lacy (Kody) Orcutt, Lizy (Curtis English) Doyle; and beloved great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchild; step-children; step-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law Gene Schmit.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Tschantz; a son, Terry Chapman; three step-children; her parents; a son-in-law, Steve Sutterman; and ex-husband, Dale Chapman; siblings, Max Reyner, Norma Childers, Sam Reyner, Alleyne Childers, Betty Ward, Hazel Gordon, Eleanor Wroblewski (Tuddy), and Janice Schmidt.
