In a special meeting of the Monticello Community School District Board of Education, June 11, building principals gave the school board an update on each of the schools.

“It’s a good chance for them to kind of talk about some of the great things in their buildings and for you guys (the board) to be able to ask questions and kind of better understand,” Superintendent Dr. Brian Jaeger said.

One of the main talking points amongst the three principals was professional learning. In each of the buildings, time is built into the day for teachers’ professional development. Teachers also use the Wednesday early outs for professional development.

“Teachers are really focusing on learning, but not just student learning, their own learning. They’re continuing to learn every day and learning with each other.

“We have a collaborative learning team process at every building and it’s a very similar process for everyone. But we’re looking at data, we’re prioritizing what needs to happen for, we’re thinking about how are we going do that and what’s the best instructional strategy and how are we going to monitor that,” Shannon and Carpenter Elementary principal Shannon Kehoe said.

Middle School principal Todd Werner then walked through a day at the Monticello Middle School.

Werner talked about the staff in the building, what a typical daily schedule looks like and also talked about coming up with an extracurricular policy for conduct.

High School principal Nick Schauf walked the school board through a day at the high school using videos. He walked through roles of students, teachers, office staff and custodial staff, during a typical day at the Monticello High School.

Schauf also talked about the school’s support room. All three principals talked about the support rooms at their buildings and how they allow students to take a break, re-charge and much more.

   • The board also approved several personnel items, including:

Appointments – Kelsey Willett as English Teacher replacing Elizabeth Sheka, Donita Ketelsen as Summer Custodian, Ryan Luensman as Strength and Conditioning Coach, Luke Lambert as 7th/8th Football Coach, Rileigh Newhard as Critical Friend for Kelsie Wennekmap and Val Lynn as Head Coach of the Summer Track Camp.
