MHS boys excel 'start to finish' at conference meet

   Monticello head boys track and field coach Greg Williams said his team displayed “great effort from start to finish” during the River Valley Conference Meet May 8 at Tipton.

   The Panthers earned a fifth place finish out of 15 teams at the meet, securing top-four finishes in eight events.

   “Our fifth place finish was good for our team,” Williams said.

   The highest individual event finish for the Panthers came from Lincoln Schneiter, who threw 162-foot-11 in the discus – a personal record – to finish second.

   “Lincoln Schneiter keeps throwing farther in the discus with each meet,” the coach said.

   Urijah Etzel ran third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.85 seconds.

   “Urijah Etzel has been doing a great job all year in the hurdle events,” Williams noted.

   Also taking third place were the sprint medley and 4x400 relay teams. The shuttle hurdle team of Tyler Eastin, Emmit Rickels, Dominic Culpepper and Etzel ran fourth, but coach Williams said the team fell just one second short of the school record.

   Others in fourth place were Tate Jesenovec in the 200 and 400, and Aedan Althoff in the 3,200.

   Earlier, the Panthers had their final regular season meet, finishing second among six teams at the Cardinal Relays in Maquoketa.

State qualifying

Thursday

   The Panthers will host the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet Thursday, May 15 at Dean Nelson field, starting at 4 p.m.

   Monticello took the top two post in the 110 hurdles, as Etzel won in 16.17, and Eastin was second in 17.54.

   Also winning were Althoff in the 3,200, 10:49.61; and the sprint medley team of Etzel, Isaac Kray, Tait Luensman and Jesenovec in 1:36.78.

   Some notes from coach Williams:

   • “Aiden Grant had a season-best throw in the discus, 119-11.”

   • “We had a nice run in the open 400 with Tait and Tate (third and fourth).”

   • “The JV shuttle hurdle relay had a season-best effort.”
