Monticello came away with a conference champion and top-three finishes in five events at the River Valley Conference Boys Track and Field Meet May 4 at Tipton.
The Panthers placed eighth among the 15 teams. Anamosa won its first boys track and field conference title since 1980, scoring 97 points to edge host Tipton by seven. Monticello totaled 50, just one point behind Mid-Prairie and West Branch, who tied for sixth. The Panthers were also just nine points behind third place Northeast of Goose Lake.
“This was our best meet this year,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “The guys competed really well all night. We were able to run our best times in most of our events.”
Zach Yates is the RVC discus champion for the second year in a row, throwing 151-foot-2 to win this year’s title.
Chesney Capron was second in the 1,600 in 4:42.62; and the 4x800 team of Capron, Ty Tallman, Cord Nietert and Hayden Tomkins also was second.
The Panthers had third place finishes from their distance medley and 4x400 teams; the former included Connor Sauser, Conner Jordan, Tate Jesenovec and Ian Temple; the latter had Tait Luensman, Tallman, Temple and Jesenovec.
“We have struggled with injuries this year, so other athletes have had to step in,” coach Williams said. “I’m very proud of their efforts. We did the best we could with the talent we had available.”
Prior to the conference meet, the Panthers traveled Camanche for its invitational, and placed fourth out of nine teams, scoring 103 points.
Capron won the 1,600, one of four events in which the Panthers double-scored. Reeve Graver finished fifth. Aedan Althoff won the 3,200, with Alex Oswald finishing fourth. Luensman was second and Brennan Bohlken eighth in the 400. And Tomkins took third and Rylan Bertling was eighth in the 800.
Monticello had four runner-up finishes in relays, the sprint medley, 4x800, distance medley and 4x400.
