Monticello School Board Recognition

In honor of School Board Recognition Month, The Monticello Express will spotlight a different member of the Monticello Community School District Board of Education each week during the month of May.

This week, get to know Board member Mandy Norton.

Tell us about your family.

My husband is Billy. We’ve been married for 18 years. Our children are Riley, 14 and in ninth grade, and Addison, 10 and in fourth grade. We also have our dog Dozer.

How many years have you served on the Monticello Board of Education?

I’m in my second year of my first term.

What has been your favorite Monticello Community Schools moment?

I had the privilege of being the first graduating class of the new high school in 1999. Now being on the (school) board for the new middle school, it is exciting to be part of it and see our district grow. Also seeing the continued tradition at out school, watching my children’s firsts brings back a lot of great moments of when I was a kid here.

What advice would you give future board members?

Don’t form an opinion of what the future years will be like or if you like your new position. There is so much to learn, especially in the first year. I think it may take the full term to know if you want to do another. Be patient, learn, and listen!!

Where did you graduate high school and college?

I graduated from Monticello High School. I attended Kirkwood Community College for my AA in accounting and my EMT certificate.

Ho b b i e s / i n t e r e s t s : Spending time with family and friends, camping, reading, volunteering time on the ambulance service.
