The Monticello Police Department is now selling a commemorative patch honoring both DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) Awareness Month in May and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September.

The patch resembles the traditional MPD unform patch, but with added gold. Gold is the color honoring childhood cancer.

MPD officers will wear the patch during the months of May and September to bring about awareness of childhood cancer.

“It’s about bringing awareness to these two campaigns,” noted Police Chief Britt Smith.

Smith’s son, Austin, lost his battle with DIPG in May 2016 at the age of 6.

Smith said awareness patches are a common trend among law enforcement and first responders. Many wore similar patches following 9/11. Pink Breast Cancer Awareness patches are also quite popular.

“Childhood cancer is near and dear to us,” he said.

The patch features the Monticello clock tower with a gold ribbon on top.

“We’re going gold for childhood cancer,” Smith said.

The MPD is only the second police department in the country to create a Childhood Cancer Awareness patch. Smith reached out to the company that makes the MPD’s standard uniform patches for a design.

Only 300 patches have been ordered. If sales increase, more patches will be ordered.

The public can also purchase the collectible patch for $10 each. All proceeds will be donated to the Austin Strong Foundation, which is currently raising money for an inclusive playground project, in collaboration with Monticello Parks and Rec.

You can purchase a patch by stopping in at the police station or sending a self-addressed stamped envelope with payment to Monticello Police Department, 201 E. South St., Monticello, IA 52310.
