One week remaining to submit political letters
After this week's Monticello Express (Oct. 23), you have just one week left to submit your Letters to the Editor before the Nov. 5 General Election.
If you plan to submit a political letter for the Oct. 30 Express, keep in mind all letters must be pro-candidate or pro-issue. We will not accept any letters in which the author accuses a candidate of one thing or another. This goes for all candidates running for office up and down the ballot.
We don't allow for such letters due for the fact that there is no more time for the candidates to defend themselves in print before the election.
All letters must be submitted by noon on Friday, Oct. 25, for inclusion in the Oct. 30 Express. We cannot guarantee publication for letters received after the deadline.
You can submit your letter via email (kbrooks@monticelloexpress.com), drop it off in-person (111 E. Grand St., Monticello), or mail it (P.O. Box 191, Monticello, IA 52310). We no longer accept faxes.
All letters must contain the author's name, city, state, and phone number. We only print your name, city, and state. Your phone number is needed in case we have any questions regarding your letter or if we need to deny your letter for legal reasons.
This election season, in particular, has led to an abundance of Letters to the Editor. It wasn't just the General Election, but the Monticello school bond vote, too, that prompted so many people to express their views.
I am a strong proponent of civic engagement. Our newspaper has always, and continues, to encourage our readers to express their thoughts and opinions within the pages of our newspaper, obviously within legal parameters.
I want to thank all those who have submitted letters throughout the election season. Your voice, your opinion, matters. (K.N.B.)
