Panthers get a near-miss at home

   With some outstanding individual and relay efforts, the Monticello boys track and field team put up a strong second place finish in its home meet April 24 at Dean Nelson Field.

   It was a bittersweet runner-up finish; Maquoketa Valley edged the Panthers for the team title by just one point, 118 to 117.

   Still, the Panthers won five events, including two by Tate Jesenovec, who took both the 400 run (51.82) and the 400 hurdles (58.39).

   Another big winner was Lincoln Schneiter, who threw 160-foot-0 in the discus.

   “It was a big PR (personal record) for Lincoln in the discus,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “His throw puts him in the top six in (Class) 2A.”

   Carter Holub won the discus at 42-7.5; Aedan Althoff won the 3,200 in 10:34.32; and the distance medley relay of Jasper Tobiason, Grant Gassman, Alex Jamison and Mace Schnoor won in 3:49.50.

   “Grant Gassman has come into his own with his efforts in the 400 and on our relays,” coach Williams said.

   Also, the coach added, “our 4x800 made our top all-time list for freshman-sophomores.”

   That team finished fifth in 8:55.37.

   Two days earlier, the Panthers traveled to Tipton for the Tiger Relays, and placed seventh with 53 points.

   Said coach Williams: “Carter Holub had a personal best throw in the shot put (fourth with 44-5.5). Our 400 guys have started to run well, improving with each event. Mace Schnoor keeps lowering his 800 time.”

   Schneiter was second in the discus, and the Panthers had third place finishes from the sprint medley, 4x200 and distance medley relay teams.

   In junior varsity events, Monticello got a win from its 4x800 team of Payson Kramer, Matthew Beanblossom, Alan Arriaga-Rangel and Brevyn Kearney in 10:07.21.
