Panthers have high finishes at Hilltop, UD meets

   One victory and five total top-three finishes were strong points as the Monticello boys track and field team opened its indoor season at the Hilltop Invitational March 17 at Cornell College in Mount Vernon.

   Then, the Panthers competed in the UD Boys Indoor Classic March 20 at the University of Dubuque, and scored 11 points to take 17^th place.

   At Cornell, the Panthers’ win came from the 4x400-meter relay team of Tait Luensman, Alex Jamison, Isaac Kray and Tate Jesenovec, in 3:39.37.

   “The 4x400 has shown great promise for this early in the season,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said.

   Jesenovec was also second in the 400, while Lane Weber finished as the runner-up in the shot put.

   In third were Aedan Althoff in the 3,200 (with teammate Alan Arriaga-Rangel running fourth) and the 4x800 team of Rylan Bertling, Jamison, Trenton Seemann and Nic Schrader.

   “Lane (Weber) and Carter (Holub) had indoor PRs to start the season off,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said.

   Monticello’s highest finish at the Dubuque meet came from the 4x400 team, which was fourth. Etzel was fifth in the 55 hurdles.

   “Urijah Etzel has made finals in his first two meets of the year. Bryce McDonald had a nice split time in the JV 4x800 at Dubuque.”

   Also at Dubuque, the Panther junior varsity took fifth place with 21 points in that portion of the meet.
